I don't know about the health system in Mexico, but if it's like peruviann, that would explain a lot of things.
What has to be appreciated is the economic condition of the dead people, for example, here in Perú every year, thousands die of common cold complications, because they live in the mountains, jungle or the medical services are terrible or simply because bad nutrition caused by extreme poverty or even because they go only when their condition is so terrible that it's too late, it's a terrible reality we live in the third world.
I don't know if people who died in Mexico come from urban centers, mountains or ghettos (however they call them in Mexico, we call them Pueblos Jóvenes), where the attention is deficient, believe me, here in Peru people die in public hospitals even in Lima, for multiple causes that in private clinics are cured with a pill, sometimes the hospitals don't have basic medicines and people can't buy Azitromicine or a strong antibiotic for pneumonia...Just imagine how hard is to pay for an anti viral which is extremely expensive. Countries as ours need really better free medical service. It's specially important to notice that in USA only one person has died of the same virus, so maybe the health system is better. It's still too soon to know, only time will tell. Iván Edited by Ivan_Melgar_M - May 01 2009 at 00:26 |

Well it is rather fortuitous for Obama and co that this outbreak should happen right before they begin to talk about socialized healthcare. Woo, now there's a thread topic for ya

Actually, that person was a Mexican child who had been sick and traveled by plane to see family in Texas and try to get better medical care. Apparently the child also has underlying health problems, but it is still an unbelievable tragedy for that family, as a father of a toddler this story hit me especially hard. |

You can't beat a bit of media hyped hysteria to get the world worked up. Firstly this virus is part bird flu part pig flu and part human flu. Throw it all together and .....hoopla swine flu.
There is no vaccine, and already in Mexico they have had to re-adjust the death rate figure downwards as to how many have died from it.
Most of these diseasesnad viruses come from, if not third world, countries then definitely second world countries where large masses of populace are thrown together in such small spaces, and most importantly, where the health care system is at best haphazrd or at worst downright dangerous.
Epidemic? Pandemic? i think WHO are covering all bases here, so as not to get caught out and be made to look fools.
aaaaachoooo.

Apparently here we have only one case RELATED and 7 suspicious but not confirmed A plane that came from Panama had an Argentinean 27 years woman who came from Mexico, she started to show signs of the disease and the passengers practically ordered to stop in Perú and leave the girl (Lima was not a scale). The pilot LIED and said a cardiac patient with hypothermia was very seasick, so the authorities authorized the landing, the surprise was when the 27 years woman had high fever, bleeding nose, etc. (It's in Spanish) http://www.tnews.com.pe/not_am/nm300409.htm
That was irresponsible of the pilot, because even if he had said the patient had A(H1N1) signs and was very ill, the authorities had to authorize the landing, but the doctors would had taken all precautions.
Apparently the patient has a H1 influenza but not the N1 factor, so it could be a different virus or a mutation. That pilot should be fired and sued in Perú, if are going to take the risk of accepting a passenger with an epidemic disease, the least we deserve is the chance to take all the precautions. the health autorithies do not know about the consecuences of the common vaccine, this is about his efectiviness
How come Canada and the US are not suffering as much as Mexico? If it started in Cn./ US?

Because it's not as big of a killer as the media is making it out be, for one. Also, the healthcare in countries like USA, Canada and England is very top-notch, if not a little unfair (in the USA, anyway). This means that the folks in these countries are already more or less 'immune' to the virus' worst affects because of the great healthcare. |

I don't think the piggy flu is that big of a killer, but it seems that it is infecting more and more people here in Michigan. I would like to stay flu free, so I guess I'll stay holed up here for the summer.

sounds like a typical flu, in fact I've had flu with worse symptoms than what's being described.. in fact it might not be a bad idea to take the precautions they're recommending during any serious flu outbreak

Mexico health authorities actted in an excellent way, normal influenza kills a bigger percentage, and people responded in an excellent way to the orders.
Excellent performance, seems third world countries respond better in this cases, Perú also had a record in the cholera epidemy, 10,000 cases, 10 deaths, the average was 30% of casualties we were 1 per 1000.
Iván.

At last this morning news showed us it was confirmed that the first three men be infected with H1N1 flu in Japan.
![]() I'm afraid we might be seized by panic. I hope we should keep calm as in Mexico. Anyway, it was reported that in addition to the common influenza signs of fever, cough, and sore throat, one fourth of H1N1 cases in US present with diarrhea and another one fourth present with vomiting. ![]() Please take care all, and not get to be panicked. ![]() |
