My uncle is going to London in a couple of days so I may ask him to get me some records that are hard to find/ too expensive in my country. Specially Canterbury or German stuff.
I know Tower Records is huge but are there any more specialized stores?? What about the price range?? I know that in the US some german stuff is $ 19 more or less.

I don't know of any specialist stores but Fopp near Cambridge Circus has quite a good selection. You won't find prog sections in many CDs stores over here. Actually I can only think of one I've ever found and that was in a bookshop in Bakewell.

Rough Trade in Brick Lane and Portobello Road usually has a good selection of 'Krautrock' and some Canterbury.

If he can be assed to do it he can get the Yellow Pages to check out the independents and second-hand dealers too; they're a much better bet for what we'd laughingly call "obscure" stuff. The areas around Kensington market and Camden Town are pretty well off for these kinds of shops. |

I believe the Tower Records in London disappeared a few years ago. Is there still a record store at Piccadilly Circus at all now?

No.Zavvi which took over from Tower Records went bust late last/early this year. Quite a few shops in Camden have now closed. You might be lucky to find a stall in the market at the weekend but don't hold your breath. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Another recommendation is the 2 shops in 1 buliding, 'Minus Zero/Stand-Out'. They specialise in Psych and Prog and have many an obscure gem not only on cd but also on vinyl. They can be found in Blenheim Crescent off Portobello Road. They are only open on Friday and Saturday from 10a.m. until 5p.m. Happy Trails Edited by Man Erg - April 29 2009 at 04:35 |

I think that the Record and Tape Exchange might still be there but I wouldn't bet on it.There are a few branches in and Around Notting Hill Gate that are worth a gamble to check out. |

The record & tape exchange in Notting Hill always used to be a good bet & decent prices too.

Much of my LP collection came from the one in Shepherds Bush. Little did I realise that 20-30 years later I'de be digging them out to review them.

Selectadisc on Berwick Street, Soho has a small but well stocked prog/kraut section and also quite a bit of mainstream prog in the rock/pop racks and a jazz/avant section off to one side. If you're after anything specific the staff are usually helpful. A few doors down is a 2nd hand place (used to be called Reckless) which is worth checking out if you've got the time - there isn't a prog section as such but there's quite a bit in the main rock/pop section and there's also a fine selection of vintage vinyl.
Happy hunting!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Do you know if the price published in Amazon as an example is before taxes or with them??

Hey pal, VDGG are easy to get here. If you live in Bs As, take a walk in Cabildo Avenue's galleries. And you also got two well known specialised record stores: http://www.themusicalbox.com.ar/new/tmb_shop.htm (BTW, see their online program weekly) http://www.mellotronweb.com.ar/discoverstore.htm (Both in Bs As, of course) I used to think not-usual prog rock was impossible to get here, but with some walking you can find a lot of stuff (even the new albums). ![]() (the only problem are the prices, jejeje....) |

I didn't know the musical box , but I knew some other ones. The fact is I won't pay $ 120 pesos for let's say an Amon Duul record when I can wait and but it for U$$ 19
19 * 3,73 = 70
Even if you consider the pound is at 5,58 pesos you can make quite a difference..

UK Amazon prices include VAT which is our national purchase tax.
