The above post brings to mind the discussions on whether mind games and waterboarding are actually torture. To me, hell yes they are! I'd rather someone sit there and cut me repeatedly than f**k with my mind. People who say it's not torture must really not value their minds at all. Hell, long term sleep deprivation does do actual organic damage anyway, to the brain and other organs. Now whether or not the use of these methods is justified is another discussion entirely (I still think probably not, torture is a lazy man's interrogation),  but don't give me this bullsh*t about it not being torture. /rant

Well, it's starting to come out that all the useful information that was produced during the Bush administration was by standard interrogation rather than "enhanced" interrogation, i.e. torture.  Torture was likely being used to get false confessions to say Al-Quaida and Iraq were in cahoots.

By the way, not holding my breath for Hannity to actually submit himself for true waterboarding for charity.  And I absolutely know he won't be willing to go through it 138 time or so in one month or so.  What a dickweed!

Well use of torture is notorious for producing information of dubious quality. In fact fear of torture is actually usually more effective than the act itself. The best way to break someone, however, is to get inside their head and understand them.

You've read 1984, I guessWink.... This is exactly what happens at the end, when the protagonist's will is broken through fear of torture.

Actually no. I probably would have, but the never-ending stream of of twelve year old kids that read it and think they are gods of political wisdom afterward has really turned me off. Not that I'm saying you are one of those, it's just that I've seen way too many facepalm-worthy content on other forums that it really leaves a sour taste in my mouth every time I think of the book.

Well, I wish I was a 12-year-oldWink... Anyway, it is a great (though very, very dark and pessimistic) piece of literature, political content notwithstanding.

Well, perhaps I'll get to it this summer. I'm actually not going to be taking classes this summer and only working part time, so I plan on doing a lot of stuff like that.

I would pay to see Wahhnity,Beck and Limbaugh go through it. I think that only Coulter could handle it seeing she's the biggest man of the bunch.

I'd highly recommend reading 1984.  There was also a good movie version that came out in 1984, ironically.  It had a soundtrack with a lot of material by the Eurythmics that was pretty good.  Unfortunately, when I got a DVD copy the Eurythmics soundtrack had been intentionally stripped out. Angry  There's a certain irony in that.  Maybe there never was an Eurythmics part to soundtrack. LOL
Now, how many fingers am I holding up? Tongue
And...what is your favorite color?

Arlen Spector switches parties...
Any thoughts about that from followers of US politics?
There was a time, not too long ago, when many southern democrats jumped ship to the republican party.
Will the repubs see more defections until they become an extremely concentrated right wing minority?

If they continue to fall off the right side of the map in the face of what their constituents want, then yes. They should have taken the last couple elections as a referendum on how they are doing business, there response is to go even farther right?! I just don't understand their strategy. Meanwhile, the dems are coming farther right with Obama than they have been for about the past 15 years. It seems like they'd be willing to meet in the middle but all the repubs want to do is filibuster. Not that I'm really on the dems side tho. Obama's been ok, but this congress is one of the worst I can remember. Every time I see that Pelosi bitch with that fake arrogant-ass smile plastered on her face I get a strong desire to hurt things.

I still like Bernie Sanders and Keith Olbermann.LOL
Georgia politicians mostly piss me off.  The last one I really liked was Cynthia McKinney.  Primarily because of who she pissed off.

Well, you're a bird with teeth, couldn't you just fly up and bite all their heads off?

Why have I never thought of this? Shocked

On second thought, I better not. I might give you swine flu and kill you. Wink

You do realize she is insane, right? I don't know if you read it at the time, but this was my favorite article of the whole election cycle. Apparently "they" were watching here, but it's hard to tell who, since not even her staff knew where she was.

I thank you for not giving me the swine flu and realize it would take a tremendous effort on your part to bite all their heads off.  But it would be fun, wouldn't it?

Hey if you think Cynthia is unhinged, look up her father, Billy.

As to who "they" were, I'm thinking she was referring to those Geico bills...
