The thing is, I agree with both of you.

Yet Mike's comment was aimed at me. LOL

I'm not being defensive of Animal Collective.  If someone dislikes them, I personally don't give a f**k.  I don't like when people blindly say hateful things about a band unprovoked (it's okay if someone asks for your opinion, not so much otherwise), classify them as something they clearly are not with a negative connotation, or thinks that their opinions are truths.  Closed-mindedness and stupidity have more in common than most people expect.  If you want to specialize in an obscure type of music that only 3 other people that you know on the internet like, that's fine.  It's not okay to make fun of virtually everything that doesn't fall within that specialization.

Lately I've discovered that a lot of prog fans here are just as bad as mainstream music fans.  Not everyone.  Not the majority.  But quite a lot....  Discovering that in addition to discovering new types of music has moved me away from considering myself a "progger" and in turn, this website.  If people opened their minds more, or at least shut their mouths (/fingers), this website would be much more enjoyable for everyone.

Wow Mike! That's just great. I was writing the same post and then I realised that you already did it.

Word for word.

RIP in bossa nova heaven.

It's basically what keeps me from being on here as often as I once was.

I think the problem is labels.  Labeling music is helpful, but it also sparks a lot of meaningless arguing and can result in people getting too absorbed to labels.  The best way I think, is to acknowledge labels but not to take them too seriously.

Of course, nobody admits to anything.  In retrospect, I used to be pretty closed minded to a lot of types of music and bands that I had never really been exposed to much.  At the time of course, it was simply because that music was "bad", the music I liked was "good" so naturally I stuck to the "good" music.  I think self-awareness generally brings about a transcendence towards open-mindedness.  Of course, the concept of open-mindedness is quite abstract if you break it down, and being too open-minded could be a bad thing, but thinking that you are open minded probably means you aren't.

Partially, but not entirely.  Mostly I was thinking about people outside of the SR but there are one or two others I can think of off hand (if you think it's you, it probably isn't).

Quoted for truthClap. I actually never considered myself a 'progger' - I am a music lover who happens to like prog more than other genres, but that does not mean this is the only kind of music I listen to. Cliques and sects are not my thing, thank you. Look at the way some ADULT people react every time a controversial addition is made... Looks like somebody had broken into their house, or something to that effectDead.

Pretty much this, especially the bolded part. If you enjoy listening to something, then listen to it for crying out loud. It doesn't matter if it's prog or not.

Well it was also aimed at Mike (hence the quoting).  He's certainly not close-minded either though.

Yet I still agree.

I listen to music I enjoy.

Sure, I do mock some bands/artists (as well as genres) on here but it's just that: mocking.

Don't take it so seriously. Tongue

VdGG suck.  They can't string a single note together and Hammill's lyrics make no sense whatsoever.  They're so overrated!  Jackson's sax sounds awful too.  Strangled cats, much?

I agree with Alex.

Not me.  It's the music.

You're just pissed at me because I gave them a higher rating than yours on Progfreak. Tongue

I hated them before you rated them.

I'd make an off-color remark about your mother, but I simply can't choose just one.

I agree with Alex.

It wasn't aimed at him, I just quoted him to respond to that quote.

And remember, what might be a joke to you might not seem like one to someone else.  Especially on the internet...  And a lot of your comments really lack the exaggeration that most jokes have.

It's just my style.

Most SR guys and girls know my style.

I don't tend to use that style away from the SR.  In fact, I am usually very tactful in the rest of the forum.

Why can't we all just get along?  I certainly hope all of my silly comments in here are taken strictly in jest - I have my opinions, of course, but everyone should just listen to whatever makes them happy.

Indeed, Patrick.

We all do get along.

So I don't like Animal Collective (from what I've heard) and I like to poke fun at them and Alex's fanboyism.  It's only in jest.

Although I really do dislike Steven Wilson's voice.

I should have seen that coming.
