Listening to Jesu a bit.
Any Jesu fans here? I did their bio for PA fairly recently and they were added to PA not too long ago too, if people weren't aware want to check out their PA page. |

I just started listening to Jesu again. I heard the debut when it was first released and I wasn't into it at the time. I've been listening to Conqueror and Silver lately and I'm starting to appreciate and enjoy it but it's still not my favorite music. It's clearly music that takes several listens to fully grasp.

I can't really get into their early more drone stuff, but the more recent electronic posty things I enjoy.

Conquerer bores me... Silver is supposed to be a lot better. Is it?

Im not a huge Jesu fan but I must say Silver is an amazing album!!! Very droopy, repetitive and uncomfortable but so beautiful at the same time!

Depends what you listened to as well, there was a bit of variation throughout the career.

Ok; listen to this: http://www.myspace.com/theshytrafficker (start with "Renovo")
The new Mastodon album is one of my fav. releases so far this year by far; yet i don't believe it's especially a progressive step for the band considering the use of more conventional (atleast for them ) rhythms and catchy composing structures. Of course, that's just me being picky, because i actually welcome the more psychedelic textures and smooth style of writing; basically, i feel that instead of trying to push themselves to surpass the technicality of their past work, they just decided to go with what they were feeling; coincidentally they made a super beautiful album. Wavering Radiant.... I like it very much, but i'm pretty sure that i desperately want to like it more than i actually do. The more i listen to it, the more i find myself skipping tracks to the point where i don't even listen to half of it; i think it's because of the less groovy and more straight forward metalish style of guitar playing compared to their last couple albums. For example, the very "Jambi" (which i'm not a fan of) style of riff that is expressed during "Hall Of The Dead", that style of playing mechanical playing just doesn't do anything for me, and think that's pretty much why some of the album isn't really appealing to me. Also, what happened to Aaron Harris? Possibly he took to heart alot of the critics complaining that ItaoT sounded to much like Tool so he decided to restrain himself to the point of being hardly noticeable. |

I'm the opposite.
While I do really enjoy Mastodons latest, there seems to be a certain power that doesnt give it that awe inspiring edge it desperately needs to make an excellent album.
I LOVE the new Isis! Possible better that panopticon, I love the massive dose of keys, and more "acidic" soundsapes. It does have some dry parts, where the music does seem to meander a bit much, but otherwise it might make its way into the masterpiece book for me.

Ha FML
Isis and Pelican playing in downtown austin on may 18th...
Opeth and Enslaved are playing are playing the same night in san Antonio.
Of course I'm going to the Isis and Pelican concert, that WILL kick so much ass, besides I missed Pelican the last time they were around because of junior nationals. Still Opeth and enslaved are no bands to pass up lightly.

I can dig what you mean; truly i was kinda sad earlier today when i noticed Crack the Skye in the "Tech/Extreme Prog Metal" top rated albums section earlier (apparently it's not there anymore though) considering how much more ambitious their last couple albums were. Mastodon's situation after Leviathan kinda reminds of King Crimson after Discipline: where to go? Btw, am i alone under the opinion that the sound mixing/leveling quality of Crack the Skye is kinda awful? I remember reading that they got a new big name sound tech for this album, and sadly it shows. Edited by Dominic - April 12 2009 at 23:17 |

^You think that the previous couple of Mastodon's albums were much more ambitious? I think they're all about equal since Leviathan.
I can hear why you're disappointed with the mixing, but I think there are some new textures in this one that more or less make up for it.
