Hum well, this topic was not really about songs which are epic because of the length but really because of the atmosphere. I'm not sure about Monsters & Men, I have to listen to it again but I really don't find The Flower Kings epic anymore, they do long and complex, full of sounds, songs but not really epic in my opnion Embarrassed
 
Ok. I think I misunderstood you then. It's probably a matter of feeling what you mean. Hmmm. Let's see. The only one I can think of, if I read you well this time, is Alexander the Great by Iron Maiden.

Well I didn't know how to explain "epic" in english for this topic, you're right it's more about a matter of feeling here, not length or structure necessarly Smile

Achilles' Last Stand from that list... But those don't come anywhere close to my actual favourite Prog Epics.

Epic fans should check out Odyssey "The Greatest Tale", which delivers an excellent amount of that "epic feeling" for new Prog (I was surprised!).

As regards your choices for Maiden and Metallica, I'd personally replace them with "Dance of Death", "Dream of Mirrors" and "Brighter than a Thousand Suns" for the English band, and "Disposable Heroes" for the Men in Black. Other candidates in the same vein:

Judas Priest - Beyond the Realms of Death
Blue Oyster Cult -  Seven Screamin' Dizbusters/Astronomy/Veteran of the Psychic Wars

Yeah!! This is what this topic is all about!! "Beyond The Realms Of Death" is incredibly epic and fantastic!

I'm getting into Blue Oyster Cult at the moment but I only own two first albums. It's not really epic but I have to listen to them a bit more I suppose...

Thanks for that clarification on how you define "epic."  Given your original short-list (and those parameters to work with), why have you not included "Kashmir" from Zeppelin?  That is an "epic," if there ever was one (and not because it is almost 8 minutes long).  With the time and mood change in the middle-bridge, Kashmir is almost prog too...

It's one of the meaning of "epic" I suppose, which is quite subjective... But you're right! I should have included "Kashmir", totally epic in that way too!!

It was just some songs for an example to explain the meaning of "epic" for this topic. I hope there's a lot of songs I forgot and I will discover thanks to this thread Thumbs Up

Overall... probably A Change Of Seasons, or Suppers Ready. It's a real toss up.

I can second it 100% ! The Odyssey is the best collection of epics you will ever find. But is has to be said: they are not epics meant in the way of this topic. These are epics in the meaning of very long songs.
