Well... Those people who don't know of them are are not underrating the band, of course, because by not knowing of them they cannot have a low opinion of the music, they have no opinion of the music. However, one might say that DT is under known, and that possibly could be in part because the more mainstream music establishment underrates/ underestimates the band's potential commercial appeal and so does not promote it. Course Prog is not a popular label/ "genre" these days, so we could say the same for Prog generally, and there are reasons why it doesn't get promoted so much or find its way on mainstream radio so much. COurse there are popular bands with mainstream success that we incorporate under the prog label beyond certain classics. not assess or value the music too lowly in that they're not rating it at all.

Except for much of Octavarium, everything since the addition of Rudess to the line-up is utter w**kery. DT started out strong, but fell flat. They are so contrived they have become virtually unlistenable. The metal sound of Systematic Chaos is a slap in the face to that genre. One word for them on SC...posers.

A little bit of reason.... It never hurts...
What I love is that even if DT is so hated by many here, they all come running to post in these threads about the band... ALL of them, including some particular members....
It's like the person who hates somebody so much he can't stop thinking about that person....
Get a musical life and grow up please....

I don't think the band is overrated right now simply because they have released some weak albums lately that took away their godly like status.
Suming up: Exellent musicians (not the best) Some hit and miss with their records , and lacking ideas in the last 4 years at least.

They are not my favourite band from the third wave of prog, but the issue of whether they are overrated has been dealt with in other threads - it's purely a question of personal taste. I've got a couple of their LPs and listen from time to time, but am not that gone on them. It doesn't mean they are overrated, just that I rate other bands more highly. Having said that, anyone who can bring Transatlantic into existence, as Portnoy did, simply cannot be described as anything other than historic, genius, incredible, and every other superlative I haven't got time to think of now

I think Pertucci is over-rated in skill but under-rated in importance.
When DT came out, there was a entire music genre of shredders was much bigger than the current resurgence. Everyone and their little brother had chops out the wazoo. I remember when the guy who became Buckethead was featured in Guitar magazine....in the context of chops at that point Pertucci was about average for a shredder.
Now when grunge hit, shredding was dropped like a nuclear potato. It was Pertucci who kept to his identity and continued to refine his chops. In some ways, he was the only one left still in the spotlight. As a result, the only active shredder many of the guitarists coming up now knew was Pertucci.
Today's shredders range from phenomenal to pretty weak......enough ranting.
I appreciate Pertucci but if you really want to hear guitar there's much better places.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Right, so the answer to "Are Dream Theater overated?" is complex. Judging from the last time I saw an up-to-date photo of them, I'd say that: LaBrie is overated; Portnoy is somewhat overated; Myung is underated; Rudess is severely underated; Petrucci is ated just about right.

Never was a fan. Never will be..
That said, I think they're a great band
They have a huge appreciative audience, are great musicians and one of the most commerically successful prog bands of the last 20 or so years. 'Overated' is a meaningless term, and I always think twice before sl*gging off a successful contemporary prog band. They have enormous value in the world of prog/metal.
Whether I like them or not is irrelevant to their success and value. They make many people very happy, and I hope they're around for along time to come.
