So, Piirpauke is a band formed by multi-instrumentalist Sakari Kukko in 1974, combining jazz, traditional Finnish music and world music, adapting traditional songs in their jazzy style and writing original music in the same spirit. The first line-up was all Finnish but later often multi-national as members came and went. It's very difficult to find any info or even decent cover pics of most of their output, but at least their debut Piirpauke is a true classic album of Finnish experimental music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6v4WIh_jNc Here's their best known song, Konevitsan kirkonkellot (The Church Bells of Konevitsa - an old Carelian folk song about the chiming of the Konevitsa monastery bells on lake Ladoga).

Are we making "Indo/Raga" a de facto "world prog" now?  Where would Piirpauke be placed?
