I have several friends who have kittens every time Steven Wilson, er, does ANYTHING in fact. He's a far better producer than he is songwriter. He has written a handful of brilliant songs and a multitude of dreary/uninspiring ones dressed up in some admittedly pretty good production. His solo album's good though, since he's experiemented a little. Dream Theater also get another vote from me, not that bad (but of course definately overrated) for the most part. The ballad tracks however make me want to listen to some horrific doom metal or something to rid my ears of the pure mawkishness (if that's a word). Also, Pink Floyd. Dull dull dull. Anyone who has said King Crimson or especially VDGG on this thread is now a personal enemy of mine :P |

How can anyone consider beatles overrated?? strange!
the only progbands that isnt overrated must be Pink floyd and Genesis
ELP: good band but only for one and half lp
Yes: two good records dont cut it
King crimson: two good records also dont cut it
Rush: one or two good songs; i mean xanadu is a masterpiece, the only one i think!
Mars volta: a really nice band but some of their new stuff is very mediocre like the last half of bedlam in goliath, no fun I say!
sigur ros: is actually very good! but maybe should try something new, the have sounded thesame since their start!
Black sabbath is overrated if u consider zeppelin as their twinbrother, zeppelin i soo much better then sabbath!

Aw! make an exception for the first three Queen albums, please? Everything after Sheer Heart Attack and I agree with you tho.

Aight
Queen (the single most overrated band ever of all time by far) The Mars Volta (the fact that people think of them as music makes them overrated) Sigur Ros (see Mars Volta) Beatles (of course but they are still great) Kayo Dot/MotW (Only here but still, my God... it's like... background metal :P) Kansas (They just aren't very good, their compositions have epic parts but on the whole just don't work very well) Caravan (They had some cool moments but the vast majority of their music is terribly boring... by no means the best Canterbury band) Might add more if I feel enough bile... :P

With me the Beatles inspire more respect and admiration than actual enjoyment - and even as a ten year old kid I was very aware of them in the Sixties. However, I always preferred the Stones. the Who and particularly the Kinks.
BUT you only have to look at how many prog bands have covered Beatles numbers - everyone from Yes to the Pink Fairies - to realise their importance. The flip side is I only own one Beatles album (The White Album) and prefer Imagine to anything the band did collectively. Good old subjectivity!

That's right always some youngers used to dislike the music of their parents and always compare to the actual music and always labelled this actual music "The best".
It's like to say "Da Vinci sucks", "Newton sucks", and "Roman Empire sucks", etc. and instead they say: oh "Hawking is the best", "Modern days are the best", etc.
Denying the past only shows the lack of analysis and appraisal and concludes of some superficial opinions that can't be taken seriously

I would not say I like them, though there are a few songs and even albums I won't mind hearing at all. but their influence is indubitable. and songs like "I am the Walrus" or "A Day in Life" stood the test of time very well, and they are still worth listening to, unless you are a stickler and don't like anything that is not metal or highly avantgarde or whatever. and they had a great knack for inventing melodies. as I already said, it is not for nothing so many jazz musicians have covered Beatles songs. and one thing is for sure in my opinion: you can't overrate the Beatles. without them there would not be any prog at all; I am absolutely sure of that Edited by BaldJean - April 03 2009 at 04:12 |

Bah. God damn myself for using such pejorative language in relation to the Beatles. "Ack, I absolutely cannot see what is so amazing about The Beatles" what an ignorant and blind opinion. On such a subjective matter!
Music is so subjective. I didn't think clearly before I typed. No, I am not saying I like the Beatles. but, I effectively said that liking the Beatles was a fallacy. This is simply not true. I absolutely cannot stand them, but there is nothing "wrong" with liking them. They were highly influential musicians. Pardon my brusque nature. |

you can't see anything amazing about the Beatles? you must be joking! put yourself 45 years back in time; do you have any idea what kind of songs were around back then? compared to those songs the Beatles were light years ahead. true, they started out with simple rock'n roll, but on "Rubber Soul" they slightly started changing their approach, if only with the song "Norwegian Wood", and from "Revolver" on they began experimenting more and more. you are like a man who says "I see nothing special about Newton; Einstein completely overhauled his world view" |

Slayer is overrated??? then you should try Reign in Blood. What i dont
understand is, why is this hailed as brilliant? To me its just two
awesome songs, with filler inbetween. And i have heard some of their
other CD's also. I borrowed South of Heaven, what a piece of sh*t. lousy lyrics an awful sound! It
basically proves slayer cant handle anything slow, Araya's vocals are
horrible. And as always Kerry King's leads are sh*t

I'm not sure about the rest of you, but the thing I have with the Beatles is that even though I can understand how much they did for music and how good they were I've been so overexposed to their music that I'm completely desentisized to it. |

Ack, I absolutely cannot see what is so amazing about The Beatles. I just... argh. I can tolerate revolver. But...
Other bands I feel are overrated..wait let me rephrase that. I don't believe in things being overrated or underrated. I feel they are all rated as they are to be. It is neither right nor wrong. And all subjective opinion. Now that my pseudo intellectual pretentious bilge has been taken care of, let me talk about bands who's rabid fanbase I wish were cast off into the ethereal abyss for the mass heaps of praise given to said bands. Genesis (never really got into them) Yes (eh...) Rush (I like them, but Moving Pictures could have been better) Dream Theater (Hahahaha) Pink Floyd (One of my favorite bands..top 5 at least.) Jethro Tull (Again, top 5 or t 10 favorite bands of all time, still can't see this godly praise) *looks at top 100 albums list* King Crimson (Another one of my favorite groups) Gentle Giant (Come on....) Symphonic prog in general (I await my ProgArchives Golgotha) |
