Topic: Healthy eating Posted: April 02 2009 at 21:25 |
I never have, nor ever will, allow myself to indulge in this low fat, semi-skimmed food crap.
What i want to know, and so far there have been no definitive answers..how much low fat crap would i have to use before i moticed a difference, or if i ate toast spread with butter for my whole life, would it make any difference to my life if i had used low fat spreads?..The answer is NO.
Low fat foods are a distraction from the truth which is eat less but excercise regularly (a brisk walk is good enough), forget about all these low salt, low sugar and the rest of the crap they bring out, they're only killing the taste and perying on your ignorance.

Indeed. People buy into stuff that emphasizes one thing and/or de-emphasizes other things. Really, if you fail to reduce overall consumption, you're still ingesting the same amount of calories.

Our time on this Earth is but a flash. Whether we're talking food, drink, whatever, I'm going to enjoy myself. I'm going to eat the real ice cream, the butter, whatever I want in moderation. I am not going to sacrifice the enjoyment of life to gain a few extra years in the nursing home. We buy nothing of the "reduced fat" variety. We do walk a lot and do a bit of aerobics, and we eat lots of fruits and veggies.
But no diets, no crappy "lite" food or beer, and no gyms. Life is short. I'm havin' fun.

Interviewer: (paraphrasing here): Frank, you've got cancer, why do you continue to smoke?
Zappa: Because I like it. Cigarettes are my favorite vegetable.
He died young. But he may have anyway. My grandma smoked unfiltered Camels for 70 years and lived to be 97 years old. I think genes are more decisive than lifestyle, but that's just a personal opinion. Meanwhile, we've had 4 non-smokers in our office get cancer in their 40s.

I eat fast food twice a week or two large pizza twice (or sometimes fast food twice a week and two large pizzas each week) and I'm skinny as hell and actually pretty fit, lol. That said, I don't eat junk all day, at the least I eat a pretty good cereal with milk to start the day and it goes downhill from there.

I stopped eating meat two years ago (fish excluded), regular exercise and yes I eat all the " lite" varieties on offer. Lots of veg and fruit. Why do I eat the "Lite" foods? Becuase it is less calories, besides I have the unlucky genetic makeup that even looking at a Burger King billboard will make me put on weight so a big thumbs up for "Lite". I can see why there is hype around the whole "pose" behind it too, but less fat is a good thing, especially animal fats.

I'm totally into healthy eating. I've been a vegetarian for seven years now & have never felt better in my life.

I agree with those who said that eating everything in moderation is the best way to go. I am a firm opposer of stuff like artificial sweeteners or margarine, and stuff like 'fat-free half-and-half' (for non-Americans, the light cream you put in coffee) sounds utterly ridiculous to me. I cook almost exclusively with extra-virgin olive oil, and use butter only for baking. I also eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, and cook practically everything from scratch (tastes a hell of a lot better).
That said, my dad got diabetes because of his unhealthy eating habits, and died of a stroke at 70 because he could never restrain his urge to eat foods that were not good for him. So, unfortunately, there is some truth to the fact that eating badly can cut your life short.

...a lot can be said for moderate portions & regular exercise - but there's no substitute for good old-fashioned home-cooked vitamin-rich veggies & fruits

Hey, who says healthy eating has to suck? I don't shy away from stuff that is "bad" for you, but I do try and keep it moderate. My wife has started making mostly healthy dinners for us and she's lost a good bit of weight. Me less so because I often indulge in fast food for lunch weekdays. We're getting together for lunch today, Penang, Malaysian, mmm.

Some clappies for you, sir ! Oriental food rules.... I sometimes make Oriental dishes at home, since the ingredients (or at least most of them) are readily available in grocery stores around here.

My problem is I just eat anything and everything - I am an unabashed epicure, but also have a soft spot for "junk" (Saturday I'm having friends over and it's pizza, wings, and beer). It is a problem, I recognize it, and do nothing about it. Strange disconnect.

If someone really likes to eat a lot, lowfat things are a godsend, and it's rather snobbish to shun that lifestyle because they're not getting "the best of the best" when it comes to food. Whatever your lifestyle wants, go for it.
