Don't worry Nov.  This is a thread that will definitely NOT be fizzling out.

I've been listening to the albums pretty much in rotation, and I'm currently on Unfold The Future.  Whilst this album is crammed with superlative stuff, just how good is the instrumental break in Genie In A Bottle?

I just don't know how these guys do it.

Hey here's a question,

There are a batch of FK songs that are available only on the Japanese releases or special editions and such, does anyone know of a download service that has the extra tracks?

I've looked for them on iTunes, Amazon and EMusic.

I can't really help buddy, but......I've got the special edition of Sum Of No Evil.  The extra tracks are all good, but not outstanding.  I wouldn't swap them for anything on the album proper.

Are there a lot of unreleased tracks knocking about on those Japanese editions?

All the best,
Roj.

There's about 20 or so tracks from all the special editions of studio albums. I've been surprised that some didn't make it on the regular release but for the most part I haven't been blown away by any of them. My favorite is probably "She Carved Me A Wooden Heart" from the Adam and Eve extra tracks. I also quite liked "The River" from TSoNE. I haven't gotten a chance  to listen to too much of the limited edition tracks as I got most of them shortly before giving up music. As far as I know there is no place where you can buy the ltd edition tracks digitally; you'll have to get the entire CD which is quite unfortunate because you already have copies of so many of regular releases.

Thanks Roj and Captain,

I haven't been able to find anything yet either, though I haven't tried a few download services.  I'll keep searching.  If anyone happens to run across them in their travels through the ether, please let me know.

Today was such a beautiful day (68F/20C no wind and no clouds) I had to celebrate it with some particularly sunny music and outdoor activities. I threw around a frisbee with a friend with Adam & Eve playing in the background. My friend actually liked the music so that's always a good thing and I had forgotten how great of an album this is. I normally don't like Starlight Man but today it worked with the atmosphere while A Vampire's View, which I normally love, didn't work at all. Timelines and Days Gone By were disappointing as usual and Adam & Eve was merely okay. The rest of the tracks, especially Love Supreme, were all perfectly great Spring/Summer songs. Then I laid on a field and listened to Garden of Dreams with no distractions. It was a great day for music.

Also, has anyone checked out the Agents of Mercy CD yet? I reluctantly bought it after a while after hearing the tracks on the Agents of Mercy myspace page, but it's really been growing on me.

Though a bit out of place, my faves are:

1 - Unfold the Future
2 - Stardust We Are
3 - The Sum of No Evil
4 - Paradox Hotel
5 - Back in the World of Adventures
6 - Space Revolver
7 - Flower Power
8 - The Rainmaker
9 - Adam and Eve
10 - Retropolis.

Their live album Meet the Flower Kings is just priceless. It just bring me to tears, so beatifulCryClap

Here's an old friend, I was just thinking about posting to this thread this morning . . . and welcome CCVP.

Your post segues into my thought this morning.  It seems that Retropolis is one of the lower rated Flower Kings albums.  Any thoughts as to why?

Personally, I enjoy it a lot . . . er, at least I enjoyed it a lot this morning (my favorite Flower Kings al;bums tend to vary frequently).  I find that starting an album off with ten or fifteen minutes of a brilliant instrumental to be a gutsy move.  In all honesty, it was the first CD that I had picked up by them and spawned my fascination with the Flower Kings.

So I ask you all, how do you feel about Retropolis (the album) and why?

^I'm not a big fan of either that one, nor their debut. I find them pretty similar, and not as creative, nor grabbing, as their later ones.

I prefer their 00's stuff, though I still need to listen to Flower Power and Stardust, so...

Well, i do'nt have any specific reason. Some some reason Retropolis never clicked in me. Even though i have the album, sometimes it just feels like a waste of money because i rarelly listen it and when I listen it seems boring. I never understood quite why. Maybe because it seems like a worse Back in the World of Adventures, but . . . . i dont know. . . .

But to be quite frank here, I think that MOST Flower Kings albums are underrated. Look at Unfold the Future, Stardust We Are, Paradox Hotel and try to realise what an enormous effort it was to come up with such albums. Think about the wonderful songs they have.

Hell, I seriously think that many reviewrs don't give enough thought to their reviews. Most of them just seem too hasty opinions. I mean, i usually take months and months to listen a single album and, in  the end, I like most of them. I took over a year to get into Gentle Giant, but now they are one of my favourite bands. When I think about the effort I make to appreciate music and the amount of 1 and 2 stars reviews given to new albums in this site I can only think that people don't really try. That becomes obvious when you look at TMV's The Bedlam Goliath (which is a great album), Ayreon's Y (which i have chosen as the album of the year) and even Opeth's Watershed: all underrated.

The same happens with most progressive metal, retro-prog and neo-prog albums. Maybe it is a local sport to bash things you don't know well (or that you don't want to know well), but still,  i do my best to be fair to the bands and the albums I know. The problem is that some albums, like Retropolis, just don't click.

Just had another look at the songlist of this album but actually I'm quite fond of Judas Kiss, Retropolis (great instrumental), Flora Majora and Road Back Home. The rest is forgettable though and it's not their very best effort.
In the end all TFK's albums are great ! A very consistent band.

Here's my thought on Retropolis.

It's not their best album, but is there a better track than the title track.  That is just an amazing piece of music and always gets me going.  I think the problem maybe the rest of the album can't follow up such an opener.

There are some other good ones though.  Melting Pot, Judas Kiss and Flora Majora come to mind.  Incidentally my wife (who is not a prog fan) really likes some TFK songs, although they tend to be the less proggy ones, for obvious reasons.  One of them is The Road Back Home, which she thinks is like Dire Straits........and I have to agree!

I don't think this album can compete with World Of Adventures which is much more consistent.  I'd rate Retropolis as about 4.2 stars (not bad for a weaker album, eh?), whereas the debut would be a 5 for me.

Nice to see the bump for this thread.

Speak soon all.

My friend has some of the tracks, and I've listened to them. They're not spectacular, and I really wouldn't waste my time hunting it down. Anyway, if you still want to hunt it down, I have no idea where you could get it.
