Topic: Moral question.... Posted: March 30 2009 at 19:08 |
If someone in your family, in your close family, nuclear family, stabbed someone, for example, and that action wouldn't have been in self-defense.... would you denounce said person to the police? Would you turn him/her in?
Let's assume that the stabbing or any kind of murdering is not justified (not self-defense) and that the person is either your father, yout mother, or your sibling (assuming again that in your family a brother or sister is a close person)....
Let the self righteousness being to flow....

oh this should be a hoot
morally I would not like to... probably would resist it... but self-preservation is a strong innate instinct... prison for obstruction or harboring a fugitive.. ehhh... probably the one time I wouldn't be so proud to have such a cute ass...
so I'd take the next best option...that long overdue vacation to Europe until they were arrested...

I'd say 'yes' too, but I wouldn't by any means have an easy time in doing so.

My family knows me- I will hear them out first.
But beyond that, I will report them. No joke. If they harmed someone without good reason, they will see the judge. That goes for my son as well as my parents or siblings.
But I will hear them first before I make a judgment.

I have along history of being a goodie good, so I'd probably fist palm, smack said perpetrator and them grab them by the ear and drag them to the station.
What's that? They're resisting? Shame I'm also a wuss *runs away*

I would do nothing. I would not hide them, nor would I aid them in any way. At the same time, I would not turn them in. If they are able to evade capture, good for them, if not, then they will be reacted upon based on someones perception of the law.

In the blink of an eye. Murder is murder, no matter who did it.
If they were caught stealing I would give them the opportunity of righting the wrong - but unless they had the power to bring the dead back to life I cannot see them doing that in this example.

Goddamn right.
I take this sh*t seriously- especially since when I was very young, my father had a drunk pull a handgun on him.

I, on the other hand, have to say I'm the inmoral guy here... I would never turn my family in... never.....
At most I would just stay passive, without doing anything...

it is a hard question.. thankfully never to have to worry about hahha. Moral mental masturbation though is always a fun thing.. but wonder if what seems black and white in theory is so easy to do in real life.
hope no one ever has to deal with that one hhaha.

Another twist, what if the family member had killed a member of your family instead of someone out of your family circle? I'm guessing you'd still hear them out first. Unless of course the family member were now coming after you with the murder weapon.

You know, this is one of the main problems (if not THE main one) with Mafia-style organizations... They are heavily family-based, and of course, even if one is not a criminal, turning in one of your family members is a very big no-no. Personally, I don't know what I would do, though in my case it is a moot point... I am an orphan, and am not close to my only brother and his family.

If this poll or question would be conducted worldwide, I'm sure those of latin origin (hispanics or even italians, greeks and more) will be much more inclined to either not do anything or protect the offender than people of anglo-germanic origin.... It may sound like a dumb prejudice but it's not... we all know family blood boils warmer (and I must say, more irrationally) among us....

I see the taking of someone's life, no matter the circumstance, to be murder. That does not mean I say it is right or wrong (I don't really believe in something so subjective.) So, what may happen, happens. If my closest family member murdered someone without "just cause" I'd be mostly unaffected. Huzzah for being a cynical emotional cripple.

I don't think it is dumb prejudice at all Teo... stereotypes.. perhaps.. but not all stereotypes are necessarily negative. There are exceptions to everything of course.. but those of Latin origin tend to be more family orientated and yes.. as Raff noted... more apt to maybe see past little faults like taking another person's life hahaha.

Well, my brother didn't speak to my mother for a year (and that probably caused her death) for a supposed slight over Xmas dinner .... I'd hate to have seen what he would have done if she had committed murder.
