great live albums....  but those two from the Who and the Allmans were the twin Mt. Olympus of live albums..  Made in Japan is in that 2nd tier of the greatest ever in my opinion... and seems to be a rather general consensus about that...

^can't argue with Allmans there, haven't heard it....
Though with The Who, have you heard the new live release of their live show in the Isle of Wight Festival, I think it beats Live in Leeds. However, you may think other-wise, because of Live in Leeds being released in the 70's, and of course it's a classic live album just like Made in Japan, but which would you pick, Made in Japan or In Concert?

oh yeah....  I've heard them...  I'm a bit of an aficionado of live albums.... official releases... and unofficial. Wink

The band would be the first to say...  in fact they did....  as great as the IoW shows were.... they felt LaL captured the sonic fury of their live shows best.   I listened to that earlier... my god...  listen to that.. then what passes for musicianship now.... sorry... maybe I'm biased.. but you know what ...I'm not.  There is no comparison.... LaL will be highly regarded...  a pinacle of live albums for as long as rock is still listened to...

^indeed, completely agree with your last sentence, that's what I was referring with Made in Japan.

However, I may be the biased one here, having acquired Live at the Isle of Wight before Live at Leeds. :P

you need to get that Allmans' album... sort of surprised you haven't yet... your tastes are so well-rounded... it's simply essential Pablo...

In Concert... for sure...  think it is a bit looser... more raw..  plus side... Mandrake Root... minus side.. no Mule Ouch

the common songs...  just like the feel of In Concert a bit more...

a monumental work that Wink

I'm enjoying the hell out of it - need a lot more of his work, though, and a lot more free jazz in general.

...look into Albert Ayler Trio's Spiritual Unity ...imagine if Coleman received the holy ghost at a pentecostal revival & you'll have some idea of the sound achieved by Ayler - the man's a genius. Marc Ribot does some excellent covers of Ayler's work on his 2005 album of the same name ...both highly recommended Wink

That was the first free jazz album I obtained - simply brilliant Clap
