The Beatles...I'll take those lads from Oasis on anyday of the week!!! No but seriously now that you mention it Oasis is highly overrated. The Beatles however are at least deserving of the credit they receive

^ That is correct, Logan -- that could be (and was) proved. They weren't really singers.
(It was thus out of the subjective realm.)

Similarly, one could correctly say that a "car of the year" or a gold-medal winning athlete was "overrated," if one had objective, hard evidence (facts) indicating that the car in question routinely caught fire after one year of use, for example, or that the athlete used steroids, or bribed judges.

The "accuracy" of other's music enjoyment, however, we can't objectively measure, or fairly pronounce to be "right" or "wrong."  (Thus the word is erroneously used in the context of this thread.) Stern Smile

Overrate: "to regard somebody as better or more capable, or something as greater, than is in fact the case"  (Webster's dictionary, 2004 -- emphasis mine) Geek

I think this thread got under a lot of folks' skin, but it's important to remember that whether everyone comes out & says it or not, these are opinions that they possess...none of us have all of the same tastes, so why does it seem so offensive to some when a person openly expresses an opposing opinion? It isn't like they've attacked you or the music you've made...

Special honorary mention to Magma, as our Magmites tend to go way over the top.

Wurdah Phillip. Angry Magmites are de hundin!

But seriously, I liked your review of MDK.  http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=155993

Why thank you so much,  It's not that Magma is bad.   To the opposite, they are quite good.  It's just that we have more than a few fans who think that they can do no wrong here, which sadly is not quite the case.  That's why they only get an honorary mention.  They are great, but we have more than a few fans who think they are far greater than they are.

I guess you 're right but if ELP is overrated in this site then I am the Queen of England.

As for Tull, they had two really good releases and the rest doesn't stand up, so I get where you are coming from there also.

I would so like to agree with you on this, but I can't.  Yes, the early PT stuff is interesting.  Yes, they have moved away from their best stuff.  No I can't claim that they are among the most overrated bands ever, although they definitely have an inflated reputation.

I haven't heard enough from them to have a decided opinion, but right now I've heard nothing that tells me that your opinion is incorrect.

Theater prog! Music that sounds like it belongs on broadway! Goofy vocals and instrumentation, childish lyrics, and all around bad music. It doesny even strike me as avant garde, in fact, I would be embarrased if someone were to catch me listening to them. Just gross!

Aw, c'mon man! SGM are great! Give them another shot.

As for your arguments,

Intellectual: The concepts of their songs/albums and interviews with them suggest they are intellectual (whatever that means). Even the name of the band is an extremely obscure reference.
Technical: The song "The Ossuary" should dissuade you. But I also think this is evidence enough: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX67nl-esFg
Thought Provoking: Of Natural History is extremely thought provoking. In the booklet when they lined up excerpts from the Futurist Manifestos and that Unibomber text, it was amazing. I found that extremely thought-provoking.
Theater Prog: 70s Genesis belongs on broadway more than SGM. They're an avant-garde band, for Christ's sakes!
Avant-Garde: evidence http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMtMTxLIASY

but to each his own, right

I think Yes is the most overrated band. They were half-way decent with Bruford but after that they were just annoying. Tongue

I really think Porcupine Tree is a bit overrated. I do like  a few songs from their newer albums, but the rest is Dead
I also don't get why Mogwai is so well liked, and why everyone is hatin' on poor Sigur Ros.

As far as rock (the non prog type) goes, KISS and Pink Floyd especially. If it wasn't for Money and The Wall PF might have been able to enjoy their obscurity a bit longer. Everyone I've met that knows PF inescapably mentions Money or Another Brick in the Wall, pt. 2, which are both highly overrated IMO.

Porcupine Tree (probably the most annoying for me since I fail to see their current relation to prog, yet they are the saviours of the genre), Led Zeppelin (most overrated sound in the universe), Tool, Yes, King Crimson (although I like Thrak), Jethro Tull, ELP, Genesis (although Foxtrot is nice), Magma (they've threatened to kick me out of the RIO Room for my refusal to join the cult), Radiohead, etc.

Huh, I'm not sure I actually like prog. ;-)

Quoting the Unabomber could be described as many things, but I don't think childish is one of them. I don't think 1997 is all that avant-garde except for the intro, something like Donkey Headed Adversary is more so, I think.
