That's precisely what makes it such a great album...VU went into the studio to record WL/WH after hearing Ornette Coleman...they were attempting to incorperate Coleman's free approach into their music & used the guitar's squelching feedback as an instrument in itself rather than a byproduct of the guitar. The subject matter, as it was heavily inspired by the drug-induced writings of William S. Burroughs, was also extremely controversial for the time.

Love early Chicago. Seems they utilized Robert Lamm's vocals more back then. To my ears, he's my favorite vocalist of the lot.
