So, we all know this movie won 8 Oscars. Not that indicates how good the movie actually is but, you know, it should, right? Theoretically speaking of course. So, do you agree? Not only with the Oscars but with the general reviewing of the movie, it´s mostly ver, very favorable, just look at Rottentomatoes.com... Personally I think the movie sucks big monkey balls and can´t understand the praise, it´s a 4, 5 at best, but not the best movie of the year, not at all (that might actually have been Wall-E). It´s Disney meets Cidade de deus with some interesting technical camerca work ... not much more than that....
What do you think? |

I gave it a 6. It is completely overrated and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone because there are so many better movies out there. Nothing about it seemed original or sincere and I really didn't care about the characters. I can't see why it has won so much praise.

I'm eagerly waiting for its opening in Finland, although after your seeing comments my expectations lowered a bit.

It's a good (but not great) movie and I went to school with the director.
I command you to see it!!! |

No sh*t! really? You know Boyle... small world I guess! Back to topic, although I have yet to see such films as The Reader and Milk, personally the best (non animation) movie of 2008 was The Wrestler. Simple and with one of the best performances I´ve ever seen I think it´s pretty much a perfect movie. Although I did like Benjamin Button more, but even I, Fincher´s biggest fan, must admit it has it´s flaws (mostly in the script though)... funny, after Fincher Aronofsky is my favorite "young" living director... I say young cause Lynch is getting old ejejeje |

As I have said on other forums ever since this movie made a big splash at the Oscars, Titanic won 11 Oscars, that says it all as far as the Oscars go. So I completely reject the Oscars as a measure of how good a film is and how a good a film is is not their only consideration in selecting the winner and any system like that can not not be dishonest. I will say it for the Academy that they USUALLY give away the prize to a good film, not a complete laughable disaster, so congrats for that, I suppose! In short, is Slumdog good enough to get 8 Oscars...I don't know, is there a way to determine how many Oscars a film deserves anyway? I liked the movie nearly all the way through, except for the forced Bollywood song-dance at the end, so it gets an 8 from me, great film for sure but there's been much that's been way better too.

I have seen all the big Oscar movies from 2008 and find The Wrestler to have easily been the greatest for the same reasons. Milk was unexpectedly great, definitely my second favorite movie of the year even though I had really low expectations prior to seeing it. Benjamin Button was probably tied for third with The Reader and Frost/Nixon and, like I said earlier, Slumdog was a huge disappointment. |

Over-hyped? Yes. Overrated? No.
I'm a huge fan of Boyle. It's a Bollywood film with a foreign director, I didn't expect new ground to be broken. Now, the Dark Knight, there is movie that was both overhyped and overrated. Edited by KoS - March 11 2009 at 00:00 |

Maybe they just felt obligated to nominate a film with a Bollywood dance scene. I think this would be the first one.

Probably seeing it tonight - working for the film company, I've got a promotional DVD of it (smug mode). Still not as cool as going to school with Danny Boyle though |

(Foreign) Films like this have been done a million times. It just when a British director does it the western world goes crazy for it. I went for "Very good movie, but there are better ones" Which is 8 but i'd give the film a 7 with that description.

I'm in for an angry mob, but I'd like to know why. Are we mad that KoS says Slumdog Millionaire isn't overrated? That The Dark Knight is overrated? That I can't find my left shoe?

I liked it, and have no problem with it winning. It's on a completely higher level than Titanic. Although Boyle's toilet fetish is creepy. Its pretty eye-opening for Americans. I thought Milk was as good but Benjamin Button was a complete gimmick movie, though I enjoyed it well enough. Pitt was much better in Burn After Reading though (hilarious characters).

It'll only have to be the first two. Turns out my left shoe was on my left foot. A twist worthy of being in an M. Night Shamylan movie. |
