hello. i just wanted to ask some help for something. i'm getting a band together to perform and i need to play both electric guitar and acoustic sometimes in the same song (no at the same time). so far my only solution is a guitar stand something like the one Malmsteen uses in this video.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3QiKAH10Kg the only problem is most of the playing would be on the acoustic. the electric only for leads and some odd noises. i just need to be able to switch back and forth smoothly. does anyone have any other ideas? thanks!

^ that's a good solution if you have access to an acoustic/electric..I play an Ovation and the electric tone is very good, sounds fine with distortion, and easily switches back to a clean acoustic tone (if your amp can switch signals)..the other advantage with an Ovation is that they're designed to be played by electric guitar players and have a more buttery action than the normal acoustic

You can buy accoustic simulation pedals for electrics nowadays- behringer make a decent (and cheap) version. More and more of the top bands seem to be moving towards this for their accoustic sound live.

If you want innovative ideas, I have no solution.

If you just want a solution, here's one:

http://media.music-man.com/images/com_fpss/johnp6str_01.jpgFully loaded with a piezo for acoustic sound emulation goodiness.
Honestly, the piezos kick the crap out of any acoustic emulator effects pedal I've heard.
Probably far cheaper than buying a high quality electric and acoustic and you get the playability of an electric anyway.
But to be entirely honest, the Petrucci model is a rip off and any good custom shop maker in the US or Canada can make you a guitar loaded with Piezos for a grand less.

Also, look out for the Ibanez RG 1820X loaded with piezos on the used market.http://www.cherubini.com/open2b/var/catalog/b/4189.jpg

*Anticipating Mike to chime in with his love of Line 6 Variax guitars*

But I'd rather take that Ibanez with piezos for acoustic sound, throw in the pickups of my choice (Bareknuckle Pickups, which the Variax doesn't have a hope in hell of emulating the sound of) and be done with it.
Sorry MikeLOL
Just be happy I still intend to purchase an X3 Live:P

you could be that band that uses acoustic guitar for all clean guitar parts (with no effects) in the studio and then live you just use clean electric guitar, just to tweak the moods of your music.

... or you could just get an acoustic pedal Wink

These are frickin' amazing instruments.

Now back to reality - using an acoustic onstage is actually a sticky proposition. The instrument is designed to be ideally heard at non-amplified volumes, without a pickup, and the best way to get truly good acoustic sound is to mic it, which is unlikely to allow you to switch instruments.

Most of the time, you can achieve the tone you want with a good guitar with a single coil and a basic modern multi-effects unit, as others have mentioned. Mikael Akerfeldt seem to do fine with it.

The first thing you have to do is really get down to what differences in tone you need to express on stage.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.
