I still haven't caved in and gotten a Facebook account.
Yes, I must be in the 2 per cent of all 20 year olds in the world without a Facebook account.

I think it's worth mentioning that would-be employers check applicants' Facebook pages all of the time.

I wouldn't use it (zero interest -- seems a kid/girly thing to me. I say that as the father of a FB using teen girl.), but current and potential users should be aware of that basic fact of life in the Internet age. Your personal information can be stolen from there, as well -- this has happened.

Another thing we see at work is college students using their personal email accounts for official correspondence: communication with profs, applying for work practice placements, etc. This is not so good if your email address is something like "sexbunny" "luv69" or [email protected].

Duuuh! Confused

Basically, don't put anything on the web you wouldn't want your boss/mother/wife/the cops/the Russian mafia to read! Stern Smile

I`ve been told to avoid social networking sites such as facebook and myspace. I only have gmail and yahoo acounts plus a free website and this site. The net is just becoming too crazy as we can see from the many sexual predator incidents as well as most recently what happened in Germany. You don``t know what to take seriously. People go to  these  and think that they actually know the people they communicate with or meet in this fashion. What happened to the old days of pen pals?

Just my take. Don`t come down on me like a load of bricks.

IŽve just joined the group a few minutes ago.
Facebook is like This strange engine for me,but
IŽll try to learn how it works.It doesnŽt seem quite
complicated,maybe too many options
The water rushes over all
cities crash in the mighty wave;
the final man is very small,
plunging in for his final bathe

I am 17, and I'm having a good laugh at reading all these posts on how Facebook is the ROOT OF ALL EVIL.

Facebook is essentially 4 things in one, and you can choose to use as little or as many as the features you want. Here are some notes for all you OLD GEEZERS (hahaha, I'm reckless and young!), and ANTI-FACEBOOK ADVOCATES

1. Facebook serves a profile on who you are; pictures, information on yourself, you beliefs etc...

2. Facebook it counts as a glorified E-Mail in-box, notoriously split into two parts. The first type called simply "Messages", are private to you, or anyone else the message was sent to. The second type consists of messages that can be displayed on your "Wall", which is just a public inbox essentially, great for sharing plans etc...

3. Facebook has an instant messaging service, which works very well, so can make the need for MSN, AIM, or Yahoo! messanger null.

4. You can add all sorts of crap to your profile (games, popularity contests, IQ tests etc...), and these are the things that generally turn off the older generations. People will "invite" you to start using an application, and many just mindlessly accept, and then can't figure out why their profile is cluttered. (so don't accept)

===============================================================================

Back on topic, I joined the PA group and its all very well, but I would suggest that M@X create a "Page", rather than a group. A Page is much nicer looking, and you can do a lot more with it.

For example, I am one of the Admins for the Yes Page on Facebook. (its unofficial, due to certain circumstances with the manager's of Yes), which has 11 477 fans. With a page, you can add applications like "Discographie", which allow you to add all the albums / info with a certain sleekness to it. I realize PA wouldn't have a discographie, but maybe you could put the top 100 albums or something like that, not to mention other usefull apps.

p.s. if anyone would like to join the Yes page, here is the FB link http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/Yes/15526452289

EDIT: the Yes page link only works if you have a Facebook account, and are logged in (i think)

I joined the group yesterday, Alex showed it to me. And I think a group is better for PA than a page, since PA itself is a group of people.

You make a valid point, but that's not really the point. Pages are much more dynamic, allowing you to do so much more than a group. In a group you have a "Wall", and "Discussion" topics.

In a page you have all of those + any amount of other apps you want, and some would be extremely fun / useful to have with a PA page.

Perhaps, but I don't see us needed a use for half the apps out there.... (Then again, sometimes I don't see ANYONE needing half the apps out there...)

And assuming that the "Music" section of the profile would be all the bands on PA.... Can you imagine having to fill that out? lol

Whatever M@X wants to do is of course cool with me though.

have received several friend requests on Last FM since I put a link to my profile in this thread which is nice but I don't know who you are unless your name on Last FM matches the one you use here.  So if you've sent me a request please message me on here or send me your Prog Archives name along with your friend request.  thank you

I guess I`m an old geezer but no offence to anyone but I think  these people who go to these social networking sites don`t get out too much. I mean, I`m Mr. Anti-social himself but I do participate in social activities with live people such as a Sherlock Holmes Club which meets every week at the local library. We talk and read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.I have a radio show and mingle with other people at the station even if they are reggae freaks or Indie freaks. We talk  ( and argue )  music. I also know people from the dog park when running my dogs. We talk dogs. I sometimes play the drums on a local open stage. Where I play anything.  I go to the odd party when  my wife  twists my arm where I talk s***.  I was even hesitant to put up my picture on my profile here, but I said what the hey let them see how ugly I am.
 The only people I chat with on my email are people I know. It`s cheaper than a long distance phone call to Australia or the UK.
I dunno I just don`t know where the future is going anymore. C`mon Duke let`s go out on the porch and debate fate vs destiny.
