My whole problem with PR.. but that is another subject.. beat to death long ago. |
if you think Prog Related...yes, that´s problem, but "only" because PR genre and PR bands never existed at all, only the certains albums. as Mr. Seyo said once ( it was The Grateful Dead-for-prog-related discussion, if i recal my memories well), only the list of the PR albums is applicable! for example the albums by The Who... Tommy the original album is proto prog, no doubt; Tommy the film music is the perfect example for prog related music of '70s, same with "Who's Next", "Quadrophenia" and "Who Are You" album. ..."Live at Leeds" album have ZERO of Prog, as same as post-Moon "Face Dances"album which is AOR (Adult Oriented Rock) aswell. so, especialy for youngest members of PA who are gonna to digg that ancient music - it could be huge confussion.

I'd argue that he probably fits closer with Art Rock than Progressive Rock given his shock rock status, and being that he is as much, if not more so, about the performance as he is about the music. And despite my comments on the previous page I do not associate Alice Cooper with progressive rock either, however, as has since been mentioned, it is also not something that can be completely dismissed either. |
my earlier post was.. I thought was obvious with the Elvis quip... tongue in cheek. Of course he has some relation to prog.. what is prog.... if you cut TO THE BONE. It is the merging of rock music with the artistic aesthetic. DId he do that... in his own funny way. He did. Enough to be included here?... god knows..I don't think so.. but what do I know. As I said.. if you added every artist in the 70's who dabbled with arts in music. This would be allmusic.com. It comes down in the end to the music... and in that... I think most would agree he just didn't measure up to that.

no, Micky, not allmusic.com! i agree it could be like All Soul's Day then. i agree that´s non sense to add "every artist in 70's who dabbled with arts in music". imho, the best way is to make separated PA forums like this: British Prog, American Prog, Italian Prog, German Prog, Scandinavia Prog, etc, etc,. for example Frank Zappa...he was very progressive and he was great, no question, but he has nothing in common with (great) British Progressive Rock movement of late 60's - '70s.
when all of these (great) artists are together in the same bunch, the confussion will never stop! of course, hey, this is just my little suggestion and i don´t expect that someone here is gonna take it seriosly. for now.
cheers!

cheers back ya hahahha. as far as your suggestion... like any suggestion here... at the core of it there are valid points. German and Italian prog are rightly acknowledged for their unique sound and differences.. while English prog in a way exists... or did at some point here in 3 subgenres. Canterbury, Jazz-Rock, and Symphonic. Now American prog... someone earlier in this thread hit the nail on the head. While exceptions always exist .. in general you can say that American prog has more more an element of popular music in it. Should make sense... while the Europeans were raised steep in classical music and sh*t like that... us dumbsh*t Americans were diggin' the blues, jazz, and crooning to Sinatra and Sammy Davis hahah. Anyway.. to your point... could American prog be seperated.. perhaps...but changes like that either have to have massive backing from the membership or quite a case in print, internet land or scholarly studies. The suggestion as you say..won't be implemented but not because it would dismissed out of hand... there isn't much of any kind of basis for support for it. Hell.. I don't even think I would either. There just isn't much basis to go on by stating such a thing as 'American Prog' exists. There is with some like Germany and Italy.. with years of print and public recognition of their uniqueness. Not sure if there is anything like that with American prog.. long reply.. but wanted to you to know I saw your post. Suggestions get taken seriously... but of course not all are implemented.
