After much deliberation i decided to go for a Gibson SG Special - after having playability problems with a previous left handed model some years ago, a standard, i decided to have another go at SG's and this time got it right!  My model has been set up and converted to left handed by the seller, a luthier of  repute, and the results have been excellent...seems to stay in tune for long periods despite those controversial tuners, sounds fabulous and plays like a dream!

Big smile

i managed to buy it very cheaply due to a neck repair - the headstock had received a blow causing a small split in the neck . Many theories exist about the vulnerability of Gibson necks but the overriding opinion was that a professionally repaired neck can be as good as new - one school of thought even states that a repaired neck is stronger than an unrepaired one, but mine seems perfectly ok though i will still be very careful with it ....just in case Wink

^I'm not a big fan of the SG, in particular the neck dive as a result of the design irritates me quite a lot and the size of the neck fatigues my hands way too quickly , but nonetheless congrats on the purchase mate, and glad to hear you like itThumbs Up

design flaws withstanding, the sound is worth it - bl***y marvellous Clap

this model has a weaker bridge pickup than the standard, but produces some interesting combinations of tone.

^You should be able to match the outputs by lowering/raising one or the other pickups, although it may in fact be the case that the bridge pickup is bit a lower output than I imagine.
If you put an Alnico 8 magnet in there (I assume the pickups are Alnico II or V from stock), it will raise the output a bit to hopefully match the neck pickup, give the mids a bit more punch and tighten up the bass a little.

Thanks Atavachron...*it's my precious* ...mine actually has a humbucker at the bridge & off-white pickups & knobs rather than white.

I'm in the process of having all of my chrome hardware changed out to gold-plated...I think it'll look great with the body color.

I love an Ovation...love the crispy-warm tone they get. What kind of finish?

I have a DT555 destroyer that constantly has tuning problems when I use the whammy bar for a while, maybe the bridge or the springs? I have mitchell 12 string and a Hamer bass.
Look at this you thing.

Without a locking nut there is no way to stop your strings from going out of tune if you're using the whammy extensively...

For a start, the DT555 does have a locking nut, so that's hardly the problem per se.
The DT555 is over 20 years old now, if not around 25 years if I recall.
Assuming that the bridge is based on a dual fulcrum system, the knife edges are most likely well past their use by date if the trem system was used regularly due to burrs forming on the knife edges, meaning the trem can no longer return to the zero point, and there may possibly be burring in the bridge saddles as well, which is going to affect tuning stability too.
If you get the fretboard re radiused to 15 inches you can then fit a Kahler 7200 trem and new locking nut.
The 15 inch radius is required because Kahlers are pre-radiused to 15 inches from factory.
This will solve your tuning stability problems.
Although, note that Kahlers cannot flutter, if you're into that sort of thing.

Nice axe.

How are liking the pickups? The tone gets mixed opinions.
Some prefer the more rounded sound of them compared to vintage pickups, other people dislike the pickups for the very same reason.
My favorite feature of the Samarium Cobalt pickups is how damn quiet they are.
Even quieter than full size humbuckers, it's crazy.
Only bad part about the guitar is that it's overpriced, but granted, I live in Australia where almost anything off the shelf is absurdly overpriced anyway.

Thanks!

The Samarium Cobalts are great...they're super quiet but still allow for a wide range of tones...the S-1 switching is a lot of fun too...best 2 grand I ever spent Wink
