 Topic: USA vs UK progressive

i voted initialy for that U.S. kind of progressive POPULAR music...coz of Miles, Coltrane, Jarrett, Corea, Cobham, Zappa, Sly, Wonder, Bloomfield, Rundgren, Kansas, Steely Dan, The Grateful Dead, Iron Butterfly, It's a Beautiful Day, ... and many others!

UK by miles....
US, though has Zappa, which musically beats every one from the UK, though pittily it's only one against tons...

Genesis, Frost*, IQ vs Dream Theater & Spock's Beard is what it boil down to for me (picking from my personal favorite prog bands from the two countries in question).
Despite Frost's limited catalog and IQ's perchance to repeat themselves I'll have to go with UK.

In Italy and Germany respectively, I presume? 
As to the poll question: When it comes to classic "prog" there is more
music from more people from the UK that I love (but of corse there is amazing
progressive music from classic artists from the US such as Davis,
Coltrane, Zappa etc.), but in modern Prog I find the US really strong.
THE UK will "win" this poll too darned easily. I won't vote because there's so much from both the US and the UK that I love even if there is more from the UK (and of course the UK is home to Canterbury and Henry Cow).

Genesis, Yes, Floyd, Camel, Tull, Caravan, ELP, Van der Graaf, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Marillion, IQ, Renaissance, Strawbs, Gryphon - no other country can even START to compare with that lot - and there's more less famous but equally fabulous bands.
In fact, the rest of the world would struggle to match UK prog.

From US, but like everyone else that is, it's UK no question.
US has so many bands that can compete with UK bands, but UK just has strength in numbers.

That's a FANTASTIC bunch!   But what's that bunch compared to: Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, Moody Blues, Procol Harum, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Rainbow, Soft Machine, Led Zeppelin, Camel, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, Caravan, Jethro Tull...

The UK prog succes only comes from the fact that they were signing in english, allowing them to play in every country's radio stations.
Should many foreign bands be as well assisted in their music's promotion and accessibility, their success would have been the same. Its rather a matter of marketing than a matter of origin.
So why didn't progressive music smash as much in US than in Europe or elsewhere. Probably because the music markets were more fractionned in US, and the music didn't fit with the commercial radio format. Without broadcast, you remain unknown.
Also, maybe that in US, lots of musicians that really had a "prog potential" turned to rather jazzy or folky music than prog music.
Now today, prog music is no more a UK train engine followd by world's wagons.
So when you also consider the actual progressive planet picture, UK is a great source of prog music, among others...

I agree with Logan on this. If this was specifically classic prog or modern prog, it would be much easier for me to make a decision. If it was classic prog, then I'd go with UK. If it was modern prog I'd go with U.S.
No vote from me either, although I do wish that the U.S. prog scene got a bit more respect in this thread.

Don't care for classic prog much anymore.
US gets my vote by miles and mile and miles because of the cool modern prog that comes outta there.
Between The Buried and Me, Isis, Mastodon, Agalloch, The Mars Volta, Kayo Dot.... give me any of those bands over UK classic prog any day.

I'm no homer, there is no match for UK prog
While I love Zappa he can't carry the US by himself

I agree - "Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, Moody Blues, Procol Harum, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Rainbow, Soft Machine, Led Zeppelin, Camel, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, Caravan, Jethro Tull".... indeed, many amazing musicians there, and plenty more to boot. But how many times can you listen to ITCHYCOCK or Aqualung after nearly 40 years?
Don't get me wrong; those bands paved the way and created classics that will stand for many decades to come; but what about this century? I'm much more interested in bands like Espers, Sleeping in Gethsemane, Faun Fables, Melora Creager, This Will Destroy You, the Residents, Kayo Dot or anything else that's come out since color television was invented, including many great newer bands from central Europe and Scandinavia.
The old classics will always have their place and the UK will always be the place where prog music bloomed broadest; but that doesn't mean that's where the most interesting prog and experimental music is coming from now. It's really coming from all over the place. Even metal from Tunisia (Myrath) and neo from Malta (Different Strings). There haven't been borders on music since the wall came down and we achieved the ability to send it around electronically.
Now as for where the best cars come from, that's a different story....
