Il Bacio Della Medusa without doubt.

I love the way they blend medieval music with 70's agressive, prog rock. In a smooth way.

I also like the production work in their album.

The Dante quotes in the lyrics are a bit too pretentious for my tastes, but, in spite of this, I'd rate it a 5 stars album.

Other important discoveries were: Indexi, Atomic Rooster, T2 second album, Arzachel....

I've discovered recently some incredible albums.

Nemo - Barbares (amazing French eclectic prog album)

Matraz - Gritaré (a band from Chile that plays amazing progressive jazz/metal, I suggest to check it out)

Beardfish - Sleeping in Traffic Part II (brilliant album from Sweden)
Karmakanic - Who's The Boss In The Factory (again great Swedish production from the members of The Flower Kings)

Day Without Dawn - Understanding Consequences (Terrific post rock album from the states that sounds like a mixture of Oceansize and Coheed and Cambria but still has their unique sound)

Umphrey's McGee - Mantis (Very enjoyable jazzy piece)

Pain Of Salvation - 12:5 (didn't think that an unplugged album from PoS could be so awesome)

I recently discovered two prog bands:

1) Andromeda - Their debut album (with the new vocals) just blew my mind... incredible performance. Andromeda is now part of my TOP 5 Metal Progressive list.

2) Karmakanic - The last album of this project/band was incredible. "Send A Message From The Heart" is their best song, without a doubt.

I rediscovered the incredible song writing talents and harmonies of the band dada. Not Prog but worth a mention.

Prog side, Karmakanic, Demians, and Ephrat.

Glad to see that Singularity received a few mentions, great band there.

My personal discoveries so far this year:

Arena: Had Pepper's Ghost for a while and listened to it a few times last year, ho hum. Finally got Contagious for Christmas, absolutely love it.

Karmakanic: Picked up Who's the Boss based on recommendations here and love it.

Really liked the new Long Distance Calling album. Just heard it last week, the first time I heard the band ever.
I've been listening Dichotomy by Becoming the Archetype since February I think, great stuff.

Hi,

None really ... except that some folks confuse progressive music with an instrument and idealistic style of music ... and take away the chance and ability of anyone else creating anything new ... while I like the Crimsons and the ELP's ... I want something new ... something different ... not copies!

Heck at this point a nice Metal/ELP mix would be nice ... but not sure that we gonna find a pair of hands that could accent lyrics like Keith could in this lifetime ... to create some outstanding chops and sounds out of new machines in order to develop something that we take for granted today ... the synthesizer!

I always thought that knowing classical music was a so what proposition ... blending the music theory aspects into your playing and translating it into a new form, was really neat ... and some do it well and others are just "playing classics" a few years later!

There is a time in a musician's life, or a painter's life, or a writer's hand ... where you have to decide if you are gonna just playing the stuff you learned from in school or you are gonna grow up and do your own thing ... you know that there are bits and pieces that you love that will follow you ... but in the end it is your style ... and if you make this choice away from your soul and spirit ... your own music is over. Your own spirit will eventually die inside ... you are gonna become a professor or teacher to try and satisfy your need, but you will never get the satisfaction that you could when you "enter into the lost chord" ... the moment where light comes alive, the world stands still ... and you can play ... you can write ... you can paint ... you are free!

Prog ... in many ways, is ... the worst possible thing we could "call" these musicians ... but I understand the need to classify a little ... but I find our ability to discuss prog-folk, progelectronica, prog-rock, prog-soul, prog-rap, prog-bullychip ... really disturbing ... like we can accept one thing but not others ... and that is one thing that will hurt the progressive and experimental side of music more than anything else ...

Why are we all Salieri's?

^ you might enjoy the solo albums of Jordan Rudess or Derek Sherinian ... if you're serious about a "Metal/ELP" mix. Just remember if you should come back crying "it's not what I expected" that you said "I want something different"! Big smile
