Shred Room III

rushfan4 wrote: I respect how so many PAers are able to cross the language barrier issue.  I suppose that I am only one step away from being a non-progger, but for whatever reason I find music without lyrics to be somewhat incomplete.  I am not a huge fan of instrumental music, although I am getting somewhat better with that, I still really only like instrumentals in small doses.  I do listen to music for the stories that the musicians have to tell and for me having lyrics that I can understand is a pretty big part of that.    Now the funny part of me saying that is that I have been listening to hard rock/heavy metal for 30 years and I have no idea what the heck they are singing half of the time anyways, and probably don't want to know the other half of the time.  But my favorite music is still the music that tells stories or has a message that gives it meaning.    I've probably devoted half of my posts to my problems with the death metal vocals of Opeth, to which people tell me the same thing to treat the voice as another instrument.  I don't seem to have that ability at this point.  The cookie monster vocals kick in and all that I can do is cringe.    I'm kind of the same way with what I have heard from Magma.  Musically, they were pretty good.  The chanting didn't really do much for me, and I find the use of the madeup language to be silly.  From what I have heard about the story, I suspect that the story that they sing about might be right up my alley, but I am not going to get that story from listening to them perform, so my interest just isn't there.   When it comes to RPI, my experiences have pretty much been limited to the samples here on PA.  Musically, I do like what I have heard, but I haven't really been hit with the bug yet to explore it further.  Maybe some day.  Whenever I get involved in these conversations, I really feel like I should try it more, but aside from listening to those PA samples I haven't gone much further with it.  Again, maybe some day.    My above points being said, I have no doubt that all of the above items are my loss.  I respect and appreciate that I am mostly in the minority on PA when it comes to these points of view.  (Especially in the Shred Room).  With any luck 5 or 10 years from now I will say Magma is de hundin in cookie monster's voice and look back and laugh at my silly points of views.  But until then....

You know, I was in those exact same shoes as you were, Scott, believe it or not. So I know exactly how that feels. It's only with the discoveries of Zappa and Magma back in 2007 that my taste really began to expand musically and with regards to the role of vocals in music.

I actually listened to samples of Zappa, Magma, and RPI all before that and was convinced that I would NEVER like any of that stuff. It just takes time and perseverance.

Opeth took me the longest of any band to grow on me. I listened to some of their albums a full 20 times before I was able to tolerate the vocals, and that was over a long period of listening to them on and off. What finally did it for me is I took a few month break from them, I was expanding my taste through other band discoveries, and I listened to Ghost Reveries and it actually hit me as something other than a wall of noise. I was still far from fully enjoying it, but it was something. When Watershed came out, I decided to try it, and it's like everything instantly clicked with me.

I think for most people there really is a certain path that needs to be taken in order to truly appreciate different forms of music. And it definitely takes hard work; I've been there. Don't worry about it too much... the moment you stop expecting to hear something that you don't, you'll hear it.

Exactly, both of you.  Scott, never feel weird about certain music not breaking through, because as Alex says we've all been there.  I know I have, and not so long ago.  The only important thing is to keep trying on occasion, to never write it off completely.  Because as Alex nails perfectly, and has always been said about love as well, it usually happens when you least expect it.
