The Decemberists new album, The Hazards of Love

If you are not familiar with this instrument, watch for a thread coming soon, to a forum near you!) He plays a 14 string model. Since you only touch the string to the neck on these instruments, both hands are free to play totally different things. (There is no picking.) This basically allows him to be playing an 8 string guitar and a 6 string base at the same time. He does it very well. There are several people out there that play these types of guitars, of course. Trey Gunn plays only Warr guitars and Tony Levin has been using a stick off and on forever. But I digress. Back to what I started mumbling about 2 paragraphs ago.

Mudvayne- Prog metal, as well as alternative metal, idk what sub-genre it would go under.
Amorphis-I'd put them under tech/extreme prog. They're a Finnish metal band that worked with death metal and other extreme genres and continues to be prog metal

I would like to recommend a uk a Alt-Space/ Progressive rock group called Suns Of The Tundra.

I know these guys are a death metal act but they have one album that stands out as very interesting. GoreGuts is the band and the album is Obscura ( i think that spelled correctly). The first time I heard this album I hated it, it so abbrasive but here was something going on in the music that stuck to me. Fair warning though not for everyone the vocals are well different even by death metal standards. I put the album up for a while then came across it again and i just put it on and let it sink in. Suddenly it became clear I saw what the band was going for. I will not try to explain the sound cause I cant its something you will need to hear for your self. Check it out if you have the time.

Try Return to Forever's The Romantic Warrior, a nice acoustic piece that embodies such influences. Check out all their albums from Hymn of the 7th Galaxy through Romantic Warrior. They are jazz-fusion so there is a lot more going on alongside the Spanish influences, but Al Di Meola's early solo work has a very Spanish influenced feel to it as well. Hope that helps
