I may go off progressive rock, but I don't think I'll ever go off progressive music. There always will be so much progressive music to discover and grow into that I think it will be a life-long pursuit and passion.

I think it's probably most profitable for us to keep our ears (and our heads) ready for anything. Prog is just a word to describe one of the styles I happen to like.

its ok man. i recently got back into prog rock, after a long time of exploring jazz, blues, avant-garde, and rediscovering music i liked before i knew about prog rock. i might have listened to a random song or 2 every now and then, but was never craving it like i used to. Jazz-rock and Frank Zappa took over me. though yes Zappa is prog rock, once i was familiar with his music and a lot of the jazz records i was getting, all the GG, Yes, KC etc records i had seemed dull. i checked out other progressive bands and couldnt get into em. but after a while, your mind almost forgets the places you go when you listen to this great music. and then something sparks your interest again. maybe someone put on a classic prog rock epic while you were drinking. maybe a new album by a band you used to listen to (prog or not). either way it happens, rediscovering prog feels so good. Everyone goes in and out of the mood for prog rock. the best thing to do is dip into different stuff all the time. like today i listened to Miles Davis (jazz), Galactic(funk-jazz), Umphrey's McGee (Prog rock/jam band), Planet X (jazz-metal), Yes (symph-prog rock) T-Bone Walker (blues) and Barber (classical). you gotta mix it up sorry for the ramblin on, it happens sometimes

I try to keep a broad spectrum of musical styles, being Prog really important but not predominant, maybe 30%, being the rest divided among Brazilian music (all possible/audible genres), some erudite stuff, seminal & classic rock, pop & romantic, French chanson, tango, fado, and so on.
That's my recommendation, Eric. ![Smile Smile](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif) |
Spot on Guigo. If i was to listen to prog alone all day I'm sure I would have moved on long ago. Diversity is the key.

That's pretty much my story too, Raff - although progressive rock is my greatest love music wise, it's by no means the only one (I'm such a tart ![](smileys/smiley36.gif) ); when there's so much out there to listen to, you'd have to be a mug to restrict your horizons to a single genre.
Currently enjoying the gentle soothing strains of System Of A Down's 'Mesmerise' album (thanks for the recommendation, KBT ![](smileys/smiley20.gif) ) after which, maybe some Weather Report
Diversity, eh? Can't beat it.

^ as above, in spades.
I am of the firm conviction that peoples tastes do not change a great deal, stuff we liked at some point in our lives we will like again once we rediscover it at some other time - all that's needed is time. My playlist has all kinds of stuff on it, what I listen to the most is Metal, what I like the most is Art Rock, what I'm rediscovering at the moment is 80s & 90s Indie and Alt rock and the one band I don't 'play-to-death' is the one I love the most and have loved for the longest: Pink Floyd - I play their albums as a treat from time to time.

With me, that'd be pre 1978 Genesis - never loses its appeal, especially since that box set of remasters came out a few months ago.

I'd like to add something to what my esteemed colleagues and friends have already stated.... When it comes to listening to music, I don't really CARE if it's prog or not - what really matters is that it appeals to me in some way or the other. There is so much diversity in prog alone that it would already be enough not to get bored. Micky and I have recently gone on a couple or three of shopping sprees in our area, and the CDs we have found are so incredibly diverse... No one CD sounds like the other. And, of course, in our reasonably vast music collection we have lots of non-prog CDs, which we listen to with the same pleasure as the prog ones. As Jim said, diversity is really the key!

I've never really tired of prog.
Even in the early 90's when I was frequenting raves and clubs, if anyone asked me about my tastes, I would always say I liked progressive music. Although, at that time, I was listening to mainly dance music, ambient and the best Indie bands of the day.
At the moment I'm listening to a lot of classical music; not something I do very often, and very little rock. The last rock I played was Opeth, that was about two weeks ago.
But, progressive rock will always be my favourite music overall.

I have to take a break from music every now and then, especially after buying tons of cd (which happens way too often...). A couple of years ago I was so nauseated that I spent a month without intentionally listening to music, after that I came back to artists I had nearly forgotten about: Motorpsycho, Fleetwood Mac (the Buckhingam/Nicks line-up) and also discovered Dungen. Anyway, it wasn't long before I was drooling again on Anekdoten, Genesis, Gentle Giant etc... I just needed a short holiday! P.s. despite the ever growing heap of prog still waiting for a first listen, tonight I might decide to spin some Al Stewart, I've had Year of the Cat on my mind for too long...

Same here ![Clap Clap](smileys/smiley32.gif) ! Got their fourth album in a secondhand store here in Northern Virginia (I'm Italian too, and you should know my story ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) ...), and that's GREAT stuff! And I LOVE Year of the Cat too...

As with some previous posters, prog was my first love and remains my favourite music. However, I too have diversified a bit more over the years, from metal to folk to "mainstream rock" such as Fleetwood Mac to some of the indie bands. Diversity is the key, because I could never actually go without listening to music for much more than a day or two.
You'll be back, believe me.

As others have said, variety is the spice of life. I don't just listen to progressive rock (though I'd say I mostly listen to progressive music), but I find that there is so much variety of music, such diversity, that we include under the prog banner that it's not easy for me to grow tired of it. Mind you, I've slowed down with "prog umbrella" discoveries. In 2005 and 2006 particularly I was so busy discovering music from all the categories here (branching out into different styles); now I don't get that many new albums, but generally prefer to go back to ones I already know.
I commonly listen to different forms of prog. Listening to, say, Aranis, is a very different experience from listening to, say, Dream Theater but one may enjoy both in their own way. If one's tastes are very diverse when it comes to progressive music, then I think it much less likely that one will tire of progressive music.
*currently listening to Doctor Nerve with the Sirius String Quarte's Ereia, which will be followed by whatever I feel like, which may be some Miles Davis, or Funkadelic, or Boredoms, or whatever...*. I mix it up.
Of course another problem for team members is that they are expected to evaluate so much music that the joy of listening to music can be lessened, and listening to new stuff can feel like a chore.

For the first time in a LONG time, I have hardly any interest in listening to progressive music. I've dusted off CD's housed in another section of my cabinet and become reacquainted with them. I normally listen to progressive music at work, but haven't even come close to dialing them up on iTunes. I even spent 3 hours listening to Rush...but not the band. ![Wink Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif)
Anybody else going through bouts of just not wanting to listen to progressive music?

Blasphemer! ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) For me there is a broad umbrella covering progressive music which makes that impossible. Also, I have a rotation scheme for listening to my collection that ensures everything gets listened to sooner or later independent of what I interested in at the moment or even if it's prog or not. How long is your LONG time anyway, if I may ask?

The day I stop listening to IQ, Camel, Genesis, Mostly Autumn and Gentle Giant will be the day I die.

Once only. Just played some punk and never happened again ![Tongue Tongue](smileys/smiley17.gif) nop! just kidding! Happens very often to me. Sometimes I want some easy relaxing music, so I play Jairo, Julio Jaramillo, Braulio, Camilo Sesto... ![Embarrassed Embarrassed](smileys/smiley9.gif) Yes, guilty. You know, prog is beautiful and everything to me, but that classic romantic music brings me back some childhood moments, for example, that prog just... can't... So, my point is that different music styles give you the chance to explore different experiences, of course it depends on everyone...

I get tired of just about everything after a certain point - but I just go onto something else equally fantastic...if you're bored with prog, move over to jazz or classical...I juggle those 3 constantly.

Haven't been listening to Marillion, either. Then again, I don't really consider them progressive anymore. I've always described them as modern rock with progressive characteristics. Even then, however, I'm taking a break from Marillion. I think I'm a victim of over saturating myself.
I'd better get back in the mood because their convention in Montreal is a month away.

(the bolded) Definitely, that's been happening to me, this last month, and still continues.. Though I'm not THAT saturated, though I'm back in my heavy mood, all because of DT!!! ![Angry Angry](smileys/smiley7.gif) ![Embarrassed Embarrassed](smileys/smiley9.gif) Though I still listen to Prog in the computer, and when I go to sleep, but you must know, that these are the moments, that you less pay attention to the music....
