So I'm trying to find an external hard drive because my laptop's is getting insanely cluttered and fails constantly, but there are a million conflicting reviews on which is actually a good drive. I was thinking Iomega, but that's so cheap it has to be a piece of crap, then Panasonic, but a lot of people complaining that it was slow and failed often,  then Western Digital, but a lot of people said it's too hot and slow and fails as well.

Everywhere is a dead end.

My Maxtor is a piece of sh*t that sometimes decides not to work.


Ironically the best drive that I have is a 250 GB FreeAgent drive that cost about $100. Passport drives are also kick ass - about the same price and capacity only smaller. Problem is that they're both USB powered, the nice thing about the Maxtor being that it has the possibility to be run via Firewire 400, 800 and USB 2. The nice thing about USB, while slower, is that you can usually draw power from the computer and not need external power sources (eg - another outlet). Honestly, I'd recommend a passport drive, which can go up to 350 GB, but if you're not going to move it around a lot (which is how I f*d the fan in my maxtor) then they're a powerhouse.

I have an iomega and have never had a problem with it (had it about 8 months now).

Mine is Accomdata and got an amazing deal for it (500 GB for 60 bucks.)

I can, but my dad has been using one for about a year and a half now, and I've been using one for 8 months, and neither of us have had any problems.

It's perfectly plausible that we're the exceptions, though.

I have a Western Digital 500 gig, and it's been fine so far, no problems really. I'm going to buy another hard drive to back everything up, though. I'm too paranoid.

I have  Maxtor 1 TB, a Western Digital 250 GB, a LaCie 250 GB and a Simple Tech 160 GB drives.  I've never had a moment's trouble with any of them apart from the smaller ones filling up too fast.  At the price of digital memory you might as well save up a bit and get the biggest drive you can.  I paid a bit over $200.00 for the 1 TB  fire wire drive last October.

Or you could buy a Welland external harddrive case  and put your own sata drive in it. Got a 1.5TB drive for around $250au all up (drive and case).

I have a pair of 320GB Western Digital "Passport Essential" External hard drives that are USB powered and have never let me down. They fit into my inside coat pocket or I can get several in my laptop case.

I also have a WD 500 GB and it hasn't cause any trouble yet. I move it around frequently and transfers over USB 2 are reasonable. I got it on a deal and people are making me think I may want another backup.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

HP, I've used Acomdata and LaCie in both work and home and they've been very satisfactory.  Make sure you don't leave them on all the time though unless the device has a decent fan.

Thanks for your help guys. I decided to go with the WD Passport: while I could get another one, like the Acomdata or Iomega for the same price but double the memory, why risk it when I don't see myself needing 500gb anytime soon?

Although it turns out my laptop problems are probably more to do with the fan being broken than anything with the hard drive, so my fears are probably unjustified.
