Zach Hill has released 3 solo albums, and in my opinion they sound quite a bit like Hella because he is the core of Hella's sound, and Church Gone Wild is a Zach Hill solo album anyway.

Marnie Stern is an indie guitarist who has recorded two albums with Zach Hill on drums, and even though she is bringing an indie pop vibe to the table, Zach Hill is still doing his thing. So while it may be math rock that gets a good review in Pitchfork, it still sounds close to math rock to me. I bought her new album based on the song Transformer, and the rest of the album sounds fairly similar to that, although unfortunately it was a bit more repetitive than I had been hoping.

the Zach Hill stuff is good (his drums are insane) but far from Mathrock, and doesn't sound much like Hella's mathiest album Hold Your Horse Is..the stuff on his myspace is almost experimental, like David Bagsby or something

as well the Marnie Stern, also very good, shares little with Mathrock (though the Journey cover is great and comes close)

both could be considered progressive, though..I guess the question is; do artists who share very little musical relation to a genre be added because they are connected in other areas?  That's never been PA [or Mathrock] policy, so I'm afraid my vote would be No for both, but I will post this in the  Math Team thread where Chris can have a listen, thanks H.P.

I understand your position, but I am curious what is it that makes you think that Zach Hill is experimental, but not math rock or prog? He could go in another subgenre if you want. ;-)

Maybe I am not familiar enough with math rock, I haven't been able to get much out of the subgenre besides Hella, but I'm not following your logic.

well because the material on his myspace simply doesn't resemble any real Mathrock I've heard..Mathrock has a very particular sound and emphasis - kinda like if Fripp did a sort of punk/metal - and Hill's solo stuff simply doesn't reflect that or the Math movement as a whole   ..but I've posted it in Math Team Thread and we'll see what my other half thinks Smile

Ok, fair enough. I know how nebulous these things are when we aren't doing hardcore music theory analysis, I was just wondering if you could get more concrete, but I understand why you can't.

Wait, since when have you been on the math rock team? You don't even get one of those cool two part titles. Shocked

I helped Ruben define things when he formed it and took over with Chris when he stepped down

Oh I get it now that makes more sense.

But we should try to get back on topic. ;-)
