I am currently listening to the Detroit Tigers' exhibition opener against the Atlanta Braves, and thus it is time to start the 2009 addition of the baseball thread.  The thread where all things baseball can be discussed about your favorite teams or your least favorite teams.  No steroids allowed!!!

My team will break the record for most consecutive sub .500 seasons this year.

Go Buccos!

Yankees' pitching is lookin' awful good right now.

My bold predictions: Angels only a couple games over .500 (though they still win division), Twins win AL Central, Chad Billingsley wins NL Cy Young.

Phils are looking good - almost everyone's back, Howard's lean and mean, Utley will be ready for opening day - I like them for the NL East champs again; playoffs in baseball* depend on who gets hot, so no bold predictions there.

well, really applies to any playoffs, I suppose.

The Tigers really didn't do too much to better themselves.  Hopefully, Edwin Jackson turns out to be a solid addition to the rotation and Brandon Lyon is this year's Brad Lidge at closer.  I think that they are really counting on players who were injured last year returning to form and contributing like they hopefully can: Jeremy Bonderman, Fernando Rodney, Joel Zumaya, and Gary Sheffield, who played all year but was never at full strength and basically sucked.

Yeah!!!  The Tigers beat the Braves 5-4 to start the exhibition season.  So what, if the Tigers started all of their regulars and the Braves only brought the required 2 or 3 regulars.  And Brandon Lyon gave up 3 of the runs, so that is either a bad sign of things to come, or a good thing to get the bad outing out of the way during the spring.  Although judging by the last 50 years and especially last season, a name like Lyon doesn't really bode very well in the city of Detroit.

I am hoping Lyon has a decent year. I got him on my fantasy team.

Not to be too pessimistic about the Tigers, but Sheff's old and Zumaya and Rodney "returning to form" means league-average relievers, and Lyon was quite a mediocre closer last year.  Toss in Farnsey and you've got a bullpen that throws GAS but doesn't get the job done.

Really, I was trying to not be terribly pessimistic Unhappy

Farnsey is in KC so addition by subtraction there.  When Zumaya and Rodney were healthy in 06 they were a great 1-2 punch in the bullpen.  They've just sucked in 07 and 08 while they've been injured and recovering from injuries.  Sheffield would be addition by subtraction too, but they really think that he is going to have a good year.  Personally, I doubt it.

When one's team is the Texas Rangers one tends to have a bad attitude towards baseball in general.  Golf (or checkers, for that matter) is more exciting in comparison.  Ouch

^^ That's kinda how it's been with the Mariners lately too.  I do still occasionally enjoy a nice summer day at the ballpark.  The unfortunate thing about it is, I can drink $50 worth of beer there and still be perfectly sober.

With a lineup that could score about 30 billion runs this year and a pitching staff that could give up just as many the Rangers might be the most exciting team out there!

While I bleed black and gold in football and hockey the Buccos have done nothing for me to earn my fandom.  We will see if anything changes under these new guys but their handling of Andrew McCutchen has me expecting more of the same losing attitude served, as always, with a hearty side of cheepnis.  When you have the lineup they do what is the point of making this kid rot away in the minors?  Idiots will probably finally deem him league ready in 3 years when he's 25, let him play half a season, then trade him for a handful of magic beans and middle relievers.

Is there any interest in a Fantasy Baseball league through Yahoo?  I could set it up. We would need at least 10 teams
