that i see there are any info about this subject in this web page.. i see onlt Replikas and Assia Minor ... Assia minor is never be a pure turkish progressive,it s mix of turkish and french musicians (Assia Minor Mission was a different oldie prog band in norway and they were all turkish -early 70's)  and Replikas is a good band but sorry they cant be the nail of a Cem Karaca or Erkin Koray or Barıs Manco or the other masters... and i think they will accept this too...

Hi Dervisan,

As we were talking on your newbie thread, I'm interested in the Turkish stuff you're promoting.

If I were you, I'd use the Suggest New Bands and Artists forum to bring these bands in the attention of the PA teams. Extended information (like biographies and discographies) would be needed.

Thanks, Dervisan for your answers.

I moved my questions from Cem Karaca thread, because it became overloaded with information and it is not easy for the team to analyse it.

Are all "2023" CDs "wrong" (i.e. differ from LP) or at least one of them correspond to original LP?
I ordered this one:

I also saw digipack:

TRACKLIST:
1. Acih'da baga vir!...  3:43
2. Kayalarin oglu   10:00
3. 2023
4. Yolverin agalar beyler!...    3:57
5. Uzun ince bir yoldayim!...    5:20

6. Yine yol gorundu gurbete...   3:19
7.  Baykoca destani...   13:00
      -gulme ha,gulme!...
      -gelinlik kizlarin dansi...
      -kara haber~turnanin olumu...
      -vur ha,vur!..
      -durma ha,durma!...
8. Tavuklara kissst de!...   2:30
9. Kol basti!...(Dere Boyu Kavaklar)    7:20

Who are you and who am I to say we know the reason why... (D. Gilmour)

I was just going to warn you about your latest post in Cem Karaca thread; and unfortunately arrived here to see you've already ordered Cry... Wrong move, my friend LOL (not blaming, how would you know!)

The one with the spiral effect on its cover is a fake one, commercial (albeit not necessarily pirated) CD released after Baris's death... It includes "only" previously commercially unavailable tracks from the original 2023 album! (and apparently not all of them anyway!) Acih da baga vir, Yol Verin Agalar Beyler, Uzun Ince Bir Yoldayim, and part of Baykoca Destani (instrumental interlude called "Gelinlik Kizlarin Dansi") had been released in the "Sari Cizmeli Mehmet Aga" compilation-like CD, which I mentioned in the Cem Karaca thread... And the last track "Kolbasti" was included in the "Ben Birilirim" CD, which Dervisan himself mentioned therein... (Renamed "Dere Boyu Kavaklar", after the original name of the folk ballad Baris re-arranged and sang) So, commercially thinking stupid music company executives deemed these songs to be "redundant", and decided to leave them out!!!!! I never listened to it, so I cannot comment on the sound quality, but one thing is for certain: tracks are scrambled out of their conceptual order (even the suite Baykoca Destani! no wonder, one middle part was already made available elsewhere!), some previously commercially unavailable singles are added (In Turkey, vinyl singles, as well as LP's, vanished in the middle of '80's, and many tracks previously released on vinyl never made onto cassettes & CD'S afterwards... The only place these can be found are flea markets, antique book sellers, and collectors, and totally upon chance... Some of Baris's singles had been compiled in anthology-like albums, but some had been left out, like Cay Elinden Öteye & single version of Vur Ha Vur...), apparently along with a previously unreleased on cassette-CD tracks from "Yeni Bir Gün" album, and even the consistency of title suite, Kayalarin Oglu & 2023 had been broken, by placing the spoken intro part (Kayalarin Oglu) towards the end of the album!!!
No wonder, there's a "New" tag on the cover, intended totally to fool the music buyers into a fake product, most of whom didn't have an idea of what original Baris Manco albums looked like... I was interested myself in high school times, and the only info I saw about this album had been the mention of its name in a newspaper interview for many years!!! Only when I went to the capital to receive college education I found out about the album!!! (actually I had the "Sari Cizmeli" compilation on cassette back then, but didn't have a clue of where those seemingly "extra" tracks came from Tongue... For some reason I knew what original "Yeni Bir Gün" album looked like, because I had received some vinyl to cassette recordings from some friends)
The bottom line is, the average public knows close to nothing about Baris's "original" works, unless they are researchers like I and Dervisan... And record companies use this fact very well to exploit people (who were mourning after Baris's death) to the bone...

btw, I'm astonished you found the digipack edition, on CD! I thought it never made it onto CD, since the only rips I found on the net are vinyl rips... That is the original tracklisting you mentioned (2023's timing is included with the previous track, for the reason I just mentioned!), and I would actually be interested if such a CD existed! Where can I get that?

The matter of 2023 - 2024 - 2025 thing is a discussion in itself Smile. I'll probably get to that when I have time, possibly in Baris Manco thread, in case Dervisan opens it Tongue
Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

All I know about Turkey is what I learned from the movie Midnight Express.  LOL  Which for some reason makes it seem unlikely for me to conceive that there would be a Psychedelic music scene there.  Obviously, I am ill informed.  Love the cuisine.  We have a nearby restaurant, Cafe Istanbul. Big smile

Well, I certainly don't know anything from first hand experience, but I do suspect the restaurant is a better representation of your country than the movie.

You bet! I have absolutely no idea of the restaurant you're talking about, but it sure can't be worse than that sh*tty film... I mean, yes, there is part of truth in it, but certainly it exaggerates every single negative detail about us... This place is certainly not worse than Iran or China (no offense, citizens, if any!)

Micky, prisons are places to be avoided at all costs, even in Europe and US Tongue. Just watch one or two episodes from season 1 or 3 of "Prison Break", you'll know what I mean Wink

While it doesn't scream "progressive," I'd say this two disc Edip Akabay ram compilation is totally psychedelic and well worth seeking out.

Indeed, that album includes arguably his best and definitely most progressive works; though it leaves a couple of essential items (the world is far from perfect, eh Wink?) See what a reviewer wrote (found in Turkish Psych Reissues page, specifically here):
"Compilation of the first two LP’s (with different order of tracks) and a few singles showing the best of Edip Akbayram.
...
(-the first 1974 album is a compilation of earlier singles like it was usual for a first LP in Turkey-).
...
Sadly one track of the second album wasn’t included, which is “Yaralarim”, a track which is equally interesting. Also there were more, progressive tracks, like “Sen Açtin Yarayi” (with Tull-like flute and funky touches) that could have completed the list of songs. Instead the cd’s are not longer than the LP’s lengthwise. Still this collection is very interesting, quite complete and so far the best most complete collection of Edip Akbayram on the market
"

The review has some misinformations, though, such as mentioning Edip being accompanied by Dostlar between 1972 and 1977. While we can say that this period is his most fruitful; the Dostlar moniker continued to appear in his album credits until 1987 (albeit with lots of personel changes), and to this day he calls his backing band in concerts as Dostlar (though he rarely performs his '70's hits anymore, having produced other pop-folk hits during three decades, with the possible exception of "Aldirma Gönül", which used to be an anthem of the left-wing youth, also sang by other popular Turkish folk-protest singers...)

The highlights of the compilation (IMHO), mostly from second disc comprising of his more structured and mature period, are:
Garip
Kolum Nerden Aldin Zinciri
Arabam Kaldi Yolda
Affetmem Seni
Adam Olmak Dile Kolay
Dar Agaci
Mehmet Emmi
Zalim
I am specifically a big fan of "Kolum Nerden Aldin..." with its uplifting guitar riff, and of "Mehmet Emmi", with great flute introduction and synth solo in the middle, which was quite innovative for the period in Turkey... Too bad he didn't keep on in this vein after '79...
Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

Now, is it just me or does "Ince Ince Bir Kar Yagar" have strong hints of both "Theme from Shaft" and "Roundabout"?

Actually yes; I don't know about "Theme from Shaft" (little more info, please! I'll look into it!) but the guitar riff in the intro is definitely lifted from Roundabout's famous guitar interlude, which turns into the part "Along the drifting cloud the eagle searching down..."

Interestingly, these two songs (both the original and the rip-off Tongue) are one of the milestones of my venture into prog; possibly the earliest: I didn't know a single thing about Yes, King Crimson, ELP etc., that is, "prog", and just regarded bands like Jethro, DP, Alan Parsons etc. as Hard Rock or Symphonic Rock... Then one day, a more experienced friend who knew both Turkish rock scene (the reason I hung out with him) and progressive rock from all around the world, had me listen to Fragile at his home, emphasising the guitar interlude! That was my first exposure to Yes (more than 12 years ago, anyway), and the rest followed Big smile.

Actually there is at least one more instance of such poaching in Edip's recordings from the same era; certainly in the intro of "Daglar Dagladi Beni"; and possibly also in "Degmen Benim Gamli Yasli Gönlüme", "Kükredi Cimenler" and "Kahpe Felek" (the latter not included in the 2 CD compilation); because these tracks, including "Ince Ince Bir Kara Yagar" are all traditional ballads, or tunes of well-known Turkish bards, thus, covers; and the originals do not include such tunes. Edip's then band members, who also arranged the songs in question in Rock format, "borrowed" some catchy tunes from the rock scene abroad to "spice up" their Turkish folk-rock fusion work Tongue. One friend told me which song of which band Edip & Dostlar used for the intro of "Daglar Dagladi Beni", but I forgot; possibly not a progressive rock band.

However much plagiarizing it seems, it shouldn't be a reason for not enjoying the innovative and quite progressive musicianship in these records...
