Actually in Germany both Rush and Led Zeppelin are filed under "hard rock". Yes, Rush are NOT filed under prog here, or at least they were not for some time. Their whole marketing in Germany was done under the "hard rock" sticker. I remember there were hard rock samplers on which Rush appeared which were advertised for in German TV. And that's where I had them filed too until I came to this site and learned to my surprise that they were considered to be prog. No joke. So comparing Rush with Led Zeppelin is not so out of this world as you may think. And it does not surprise me at all that Led Zeppelin win, or only mildly so. It surprises me mildly because this site seems to have lots of big Rush fans (else those polls resulting in Peart as "best drummer" can hardly be understood), but obviously the mighty Zep have more fans still.

I was actually commenting on the sheer volume of votes cast in the poll overall.  It would seem that nearly the whole of PA has cast a vote!!

I think you'll find that the problem here is that this poll allows multiple votes from members.  There may be some good-natured "ballot box stuffing" going on.  As they say in Chicago, "Vote early and Vote often."

Strictly progressively-speaking, Rush would easily get my vote. However, all things considered, I have to vote for Led Zeppelin, who is a band that is definitely greater than the sum of its parts.

well, Rush had been trailing by something between 100 and 200 votes all the time, so some Rush fan seems to have done it first. I can hardly imagine anything more silly

Neither can I, but it's been fun to watch - and, yes I only voted once
It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough.

Led Zeppelin by the size of the universe.

I might be underrating Zep there, but it's close enough.

No, but in German shops. And it was the way the marketing for Rush was done in Germany. And keep in mind that "prog" is a relatively new name. Back when their music came out the name "prog" or "progressive" did not exist: But Rush were compared with bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple instead of Yes and Genesis.

^^ It was the same way in Michigan where I grew up as well, but then we had a large Dutch population so maybe that helped.

Quite.
In the UK in the 70s Magma, Can and VDGG were all filed under Pop. As they were in Germany I guess. Fortunately we dont use this catch-all system in the real world.
