Topic: Wakeman Six Wives Live, London May 2009 Posted: December 22 2008 at 10:57 |
Apparently Rick Wakeman is performing "Six Wives" in its entirety open air at Hampton Court Palace on 1st and 2nd May 2009, prices start from (gulp) £50 and go up from there, including a VIP package for about £170. Also features new works recorded for the event, an orchestra and band. Would love to go but really can't afford it. Shame.
Details on yes world or rwcc.com or just Google for it!

Wow. Sounds great as a concert, but it's so pricey, it would almost make Phil Collins gealous.

Actually £50 is a fair bit but it's not too bad considering how much I paid for Stevie Wonder and how much Clapton is charging at the RAH. I might consider it.

Yeah, bummer. Even more expensive for us yanks. We'll just have to wait for the inevitable DVD. Hope it's in 5.1!

Great article on this gig in The Times yesterday (Saturday 7th Feb) and the article is reproduced on line at:
I love the bit:
As well as Wakeman, clad in a cape and surrounded by his customary rack of 20 keyboards, there will be a choir, a full orchestra, a company of ballet dancers and several other “surprises”.
“The only person who looked worried was my accountant,” he said. His accountant was perhaps remembering the time that Wakeman staged his musical interpretation of the legend of King Arthur, on ice, skaters in mythical costumes swirling around a giant castle in Wembley Arena, an endeavour that lost a great deal of money, although it boosted sales of his Arthurian concept album.
and also,
“If this is as successful as I hope, then next year we will do Arthur on ice,” said Wakeman. “We'll be back."
Cheers,
Rob

As part of a line-up of events marking the 500th anniversary of King Henry VIII’s accession to the throne, prog legend Rick Wakeman is to perform his legendary debut solo album The Six Wives of Henry VIII at Hampton Court Palace on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 May 2009.
This will be the first and only time the 15-million selling, 1972 album has been performed in its entirety - along with additional musical scores that Rick has written specially for this historic anniversary performance: Tudor Overture, Defender of the Faith and Tudor Rock. Rick will be joined on stage by an expanded band, The English Chamber Choir, an orchestra and guest narrator.
A video of Rick discussing his influences and inspirations can be viewed here:

This is very tempting seeing as it is just 'up the road-ish' from where I live.
To see and hear this one-off performance in such impressive and beautiful surroundings is making me reach for my 'flexible friend'.
Hmmmm....

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

I'd love to go... suspect that the price, travel etc. probably won't make it doable.

If you watched the interview with Rick he says he`s going to have a 72 piece orchestra, 7 piece rock band, 40 piece choir, guests, dancers, effects 20th century progrock meets the 21st century I guess the £50 entrance charge is justified.

If I had money I would go. As it is, I'm getting paid on Friday, but don't know yet how much money will be left over once I'm done paying for things I've already bought.

I think that I'll stand on Hampton Wick and listen from there.
There's a half decent pub facing The Wick...
