I agree that when they a Pink Floyd clone-ish band they were prog, but that's not what they're famous for. And again, I don't care that people enjoy the music, at least it's well made alt rock. I care that always win the best prog album of the year award (nevermind all the collabs who say in their review that Deadwing isn't even really a prog album!) and so many people think he's a motherf**king genius who is ZOMG SO INNOVATIVE.
He's remastering the KC albums for 5.1 for some reason, which has nothing to do with his music. |

Ehh, back for today, did 2 and a half hours of walking, but since I haven't done over an 3 hours of walking since the 15th of January, my legs are kinda buggered already.
Figured I better come back and rest, since tomorrow is a 6+ hour slog. |

Deadwing is terrible.
It really is. I liked it the first few times. I left it unplayed for a year and returned to it and it sounded terrible! Now I realise it was terrible all along. And well... no, it doesn't have a link to his own music but he's still remastering the one band that is considered prog's, discography. So he's still associated with prog whether he wants to deny it or not. |

I like Tool, well not their early albums, but their last two albums quite a lot and honestly, I don't pay attention to the lyrics. There is a lot of complex sh*t going on in their music, even if it isn't blatantly obvious at times, but it's definitely 'prog enough' to be here, which is enough I s'pose. PoS is apparently one of the more popular prog metal bands and apparently they were a really influential and important band to the genre. Hell, I'm on the Prog Metal Team, and even I think they are crap and boring and don't see why the band is considered good, let alone being one of 'flag bearers' of prog metal. PoS= Piece of sh*t. |

Oh, I see what you're saying. But being prog-related is irrelevant. ;-)
Granted, Miracle, I have not heard a full Tool album. But listening to Lateralus on Youtube doesn't make me want to slog through the whole thing, much less pay for it.
Harry, I changed Twilight even though I put a whole 5 minutes into filtering it red because irony is a dead scene.

I was surprised Deadwing won too, it's their most straightforward and poppy album, but it's still catchy and very enjoyable imo.

Yeah, I like PT, but I sympathize with you on the 'they aren't really prog' bit. Their last album featured about one proper prog rock song, stuff that you can tag as 'prog related' and the rest was not in the realm of progressive rock at all. |

PoS has yet to release an album worth more than 2 stars in my book.
I'm partly biased being a guitarist too, because part of why I don't like Pain of Salvation that much is because they use multi thousand dollar guitar rigs and make it sound crap, and I've heard guys using 300 dollar equipment recording direct into a PC that had tone that was significantly. If you own gear that expensive and still manage to make it sound lifeless and dull and washed out, you probably should learn to play the flute instead. |

It completely ruins the album. Of course, Beyond the Pale is the last track and is probably my favourite by them but Second Love is so so so so bad. |

Never thought I'd see anyone describe PoS in those terms, because IMO that's everything they're not Watch that Iter Impius video and tell me that didn't move you at all(ignore the actual video) Edited by The Miracle - January 25 2009 at 19:46 |

Yeah, PT is pretty much alt rock now, and a good alt rock band at that IMO. But christ, they shouldn't even be in the top 100 of best prog albums of the year. And sorry to disappoint fanboys who may potentially enter the thread at this time, but Steven Wilson is NOT "ZOMG SO INNOVATIVE". |

The album Scarsick was released on January 22, 2007, having leaked early December 2006. It is more band oriented than "BE", with Daniel Gildenlöw playing bass in the studio. Recent interviews
with Daniel have revealed that Scarsick is, in fact, the second part of
The Perfect Element, confirming the speculation of many fans.
That's bullsh*t. It's more like a Gildenlow solo performance with people helping him out... Kristoffer Gildenlow had left and well... the band has been sh*t since then. |

Exactly! If this were not a prog site I would understand why everbody has leapt on them, but it is.
I will grant you as well that I may be missing the complex stuff that is happening under the boring surface of Tool's alt metal. I admit I have a prejudice against the style they use and I have to struggle to stop myself from turning it off when they drop into those whispered vocals and softer, slower distorted guitars sections that are in every damn alt-rock/alt-metal/post-grunge song. If you have no idea what I am talking about, skip to 1:30. Although of course Tool are better than Breaking Benjamin.
And it's ok to like to like alt-rock! One of my favorite bands is The Paper Chase! Edited by Henry Plainview - January 25 2009 at 19:47 |
