I'm not. LOL

Even people who don't like VdGG say he's a great vocalist... except you. LOL

Where is Patrice?

That's the problem with VDGG for me.

1. The music is bland.
2. Hammill makes it even worse by being bland half of the time and laughable the other half. His lyrics, on top of that, are easily some of the worst lyrics I've ever read in my entire life. And, trust me, I read along to all the lyrics on ALL of their albums.

I don't like Hammill's vocals either; someday I might eventually get used to them, but with the saxophone player who sounds like he is strangling a cat it'll be difficult.

He's a fairly good singer, and I'm not as against him as many, but he's just never more than that.

Hammill is one of about five genuine breakthrough singers. He creates complex emotions, shades of emotion and ideas with his voice. What he does isn't always obvious on the first listen, which is a plus. His uses of harmonies are unique and challenging. When he does sing clean vocals, it's without exception amazing (just take the live version of (No More) The Submariner, or This Side Of The Looking Glass or Lost).

Sorry, there is just no comparison. This is like putting Steven Wilson against Peter Gabriel. Unoffensive vocalist vs. great vocal artist.

Not to mention, Hammill's compositions are basically the cleverest in terms of creating a relationship between the music and the ideas behind the lyrics.

All subjectivity, really, because I feel as strongly about Labrie as you do Hammill and about Hammill as you do Labrie. Hammill comes off as extremely silly and childish to me, and that's when he annoys me. The other half of the time he's mediocre.

Just asking, and this is because I genuinely don't know the metal vocals scene/the technical side of vocals, not because I'm being sarcastic/witty, what has Labrie done that others haven't done before him?

The sax is my favorite part of VDGG, when it's actually done well.

I much prefer the avant sax on Leg End. Now THAT'S done well all the time.

It's because you don't understand the lyrics, Alex.  Not only that, but how clever his wording is and how he fits it to the music.

I'd love to hear you sing like Hammill and write as well as him.

Try Hammill solo or the two VdGG albums without David Jackson. Wink

It's not really what Labrie has done on his own; it's what he has done in the context of the entire band and what they've accomplished.

As a singer, there's not much more than saying that Labrie has a really unique, pleasant voice to me and that it is extremely effective in helping to contribute to the overall sound of DT. I wouldn't say he's the most groundbreaking singer ever, but he manages to consistently strike a chord with me.

I think his work on SFAM and other songs/albums is an outbreak in emotional quality that I hardly ever hear from any other vocalists.

Akerfeldt has a better and move innovative voice than Labrie as well.

I don't want to sing like Hammill; I don't intend to repeat what already has been done.

And I obviously don't understand the lyrics. They baffle me; they're incredibly childish. But that's all because I have a certain frame of reference that is entirely different than yours.

Wow, you've just agreed with us, then Alex.

Hammill is indeed better.
