Yep, I'm out in the western part of MD, crammed right between WV and PA...nobody wants us.LOL  Lived here since I was born and have a love/hate/indifferent (haha) attitude about it. 
 
Where are you in PA?  I've been all over that state...

Sure have.  We used to go out to Lancaster County every now and again, and you'd often see horse-drawn carriages out and about (unfortunately, when you get behind one of these things on a single lane road it's a real nightmare).  They're friendly people, but obviously holding onto their culture becomes harder and harder, enough of modern society has sort of pushed into where they live that it becomes impossible for their children to not be impacted by it, and a good number of them end up forswearing the Amish way.
 
When I went to Washington DC on vacation 2 summers ago we drove through Pennsylvania to get there.  When we stopped at a rest area for lunch or dinner a car pulled up and an Amish or Mennanite family came in and ordered fast food and ate.  I was kind of surprised but I guess that they have cars (maybe to be used by members of the group) for when they want to travel greater distances.

I once had a long discussion with an Indian guy on the 'phone about why I didn't want a new 'phone.  He was annoyingly persistent but I wasn't hanging up!  In the end he hung up on me.

I felt so good!

But it took ages... I basically said I don't have many friends, I don't need a mobile 'phone.  He couldn't understand this concept.

I annoyed him.  I hope he got the sack after veering off from his script. LOL

That's not easy to accomplish! I've been able to do it once...I just kept telling the guy that his mother was a hamster and his father smelt of elderberries (I don't think he got the reference though).

I later saw an episode of Cold Case, which takes place in Philly, where they were investigating the murder of an Amish girl had moved to the city and had been killed.  I want to say that there was something said within there about it being unusual but that they did own cars which they used on occasion.

I think the Menninites are allowed to own cars and phones; but it just depends on the person (like other religions, people interpret differently).  I've seen the rare group of Amish people walking around town before; someone told me they're allowed to use public transport occasionally...but I really don't know much about them.

I"ve been to Phillie once...I think we may have been to the Montgomery courthouse but it's been a while so I'm hazy.  I bet people are crazy there now with the Eagles going to the Super BowlTongue (if you're a fan...sorry, I couldn't help it).

Quick life story:  went to school in Philadelphia where I met my wife, after graduation we lived in the DC suburbs for 6 years, then moved back in the summer of 2005.

And yes, well, the fans here just sort of accept their performance with a quiet resignation:  it's really nothing new.  Plus, they can still enjoy the Phillies championship for a while.
