le deuxieme souffle - Another JP Melville for me. Not as great as Le Samourai or Le Cercle Rouge or Les Doulos, but still friggin awesome.
8/10

I take your point about this movie - saw it myself about a year ago & to be honest, it just bored me; struck me it was done specifically to shock (see also the laughable 'Hostel' ) but ended up being shallow & sub-standard - that's a couple of hours of my life I'll never get back |

You should see "Viva la Muerte!" by Fernando Arrabal or "Montana Sacra" by Alejandro Jodorowski. "A Clockwork Orange" is tame compared to those movies. As to the boobs: You are probably located in the USA. In Europe we have no problem with showing boobs (and more) in movies. Boobs would definitely not be a reason to cut a movie in Europe. |

I have no idea what to make of A Clockwork Orange. It certainly was intense, and I can see why they had to cut some of it to make it into theaters, that was a lot of boobs. I can honestly say I have never seen a movie like that before, which is something. Edited by Henry Plainview - February 04 2009 at 01:49 |

The Frontrunners Straight-forward documentary about a student body election at New York City's most prestigious high school. Interesting if a little slow.

Punishment Park (1971) - leftist propaganda
movie, pretty brash and in your face but also very B & W, not very engaging 5/10
Mouchette (1967) - I liked this movie and I don't even know why, I think it was more symbolic in relation to the main character Mouchette, like the bird trapped in the wire at the beginning symbolized Mouchette trapped in her unloving life, the end with the rabbits being trapped in field with the barrage of hunters and its only escape is death symbolized Mouchette being trapped in her life of unfeeling and selfish adults and her only release was her suicide - she did die right? I could have it all wrong too, either way I'd like to see more Bresson films this was pretty neat! 7/10 Chopper (2000) - story of Marky Mark "Chopper" Read, a legendary criminal who wrote his autobiography while serving a jail sentence in prison. 6/10 |

RockNRolla - The new Guy flick. I thought it was pretty cool and up to standards. Supposedly part of a trilogy, so I'm anxious for the next 2 if they ever get made. Plenty of funny parts too. 7.5/10

Salo - Yep, THE Salo. I have been wanting to see this for a few years now since its one of the "most controversial films". I can see why. It was pretty nasty. I didn't watch the whole thing, and fast forwarded through some of it too because it was kind of boring and I got the point after a few minutes. I guess part of the controversy lies in that some people say this is a gross but brilliant film while others just say its gross. I just don't think it was very well done.

Zabriskie Point
The cinematography and music is brilliant of course, but as a whole I wasn't very impressed. Not much really happens and I guess that's kind of its point because the movie seems to be a bit of a dead-pan satire of the counterculture of the day but even as that it's not as good as it could have been. Maybe I was disappointed because I expected it to be as surrealistic as the director's previous movie Blow Up? Edited by Toaster Mantis - January 28 2009 at 03:39 |

I finally saw Apocalypse Now. Pretty good but the soundtrack was annoying and some parts were kind of dull. 8.5/10

**Spoiler alert**
Just watched Irreversible. I really don't know what to make of this film and I'm certainly not going to give it a star rating. Technically, it was brilliant. The camerawork was quite fantastic, and even the use of colour (a lot of warm reds throughout, relating to the womb). But I can't work out what "Time ruins everything" has to do with the rape. She made a decision to walk alone, which was really foolish, and I'm not sure where time relates to this. There was the suggestion at one point that fate plays a part...I guess I would love to know what the director's message is. Anyway, this is strictly a one-viewing film for me, I'll definitely never watch it again. |

Seemed to me they are going after the Rocky Horror Picture Show's fanbase...

Watched Le Circle Rouge again tonight.
Also: Death Wish 3: This was pretty hilarious. 6/10. The Tin Drum: An interesting film. I believe it won best foreign flick at the oscars years and years ago? Anyways the kid in it was rather creepy. Very unique premise that the boy didn't want to grow up. And the whole love triangle and yadda yadda yadda. It was good, but wasn't one of my favorites or anything. 7/10.

Hogfather (2006) - made for BBC TV movie although it had a big screen
quality, a humorous fantasy based on the Terry Pratchett novel. I think
it started off really strong the way they laid down the foundation of
the plot, introduced the characters and set up the fictional land of
Discworld. When it was set in motion it tended to drag after a while
and I was hoping the group of villains would have had more of an
adventure set out for them instead of just the single place they start
and end at. Over all though it was pretty well done and while there was
plenty of humor it wasn't overt. 7/10
Gran Torino (2008) - Hmm, I didn't realize this was going to be so much of a comedy. A lot of this seemed a bit outlandish and exaggerated. I was hoping for something more serious...and I guess it was serious in some parts and towards the end...and I liked the ending too but I think it lacked some of the impact it ought to have had. I see my own fate turning out something similar to Kowalski. My favorite part of the movie though is when the Asian girl and dumb white boy are accosted by the 3 black thugs and Kowalski steps out of his truck and says: "Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn't have f'd with? That's me." I clapped in the theater for that one. 6.5/10 The Resurrected (1992) - based on the Lovecraft tale, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward." I was actually surprised how well done this was considering what they had to work with. The story unfolded in a well paced and interesting fashion also had some genuinely creepy moments. Dexter Ward's "creations" were pretty well done too. There was a few awkward moments though like when March's partner dies at the end he doesn't even blink and eye about it....his attitude was like, "oh well" :shrugs:....bad acting and unrealistic reactions to given situations holds it back. 6/10 |

The Adventures of Baron Münchhausen
This is an awesome movie, and I don't just say this because I grew up with the Baron Münchhausen tall tales as an integral part of my childhood, but because this movie is... well, it's a great exciting and funny children's fantasy movie but something more than that. There's lot of typical Terry Gilliam commentaries on human behaviour and society, but it's worked seamlessly into the story and mostly stays in the subtext so that it doesn't feel forced or distracts from the lightheartedness of the whole endeavour. It expands upon the Münchhausen stories while also respecting it. Also, a before-she-was-famous Uma Thurman as Venus? Greatest casting ever. |

Live Flesh - A great Pedro Almodovar film. Plenty of great actors, a great emotional story. The human condition is again caught on camera extremely well by Mr. Almodovar. 8/10
