I'm curious what you consider to be RIO rather than Avant influenced other than chamber prog. Not that I doubt you, but I have no idea myself.

Brian Johnson is currently telling me that she's got the jack. I hope that she's got an ace too, because that would be blackjack.

Oh, I'll have to go through the list, but a band like U Totem, for example, is clearly RIO influenced. Anything that has heavy influence from Henry Cow or SMM (ignoring, as you said, all the chamber prog groups, of which there are a good many). |

Oh yeah, I forgot about the U Totem/5uus circuit.
What would Henry Cow and SMM influenced be? I could see something like Hoyry Kone and if we're stretching it Alamaailman Vasarat for SMM, but other than the side projects of members, I always saw Henry Cow as more or less standing alone, but I'm sure I'm wrong.
I'll let you experts try to figure out The Residents, SGM, and Estradasphere. ;-)

Rachmaninov
Trio élégiaque no. 1 in G minor. Such a great piece of music. (weird thing about classical: I tend to like the pieces the CD booklets tell me are less mature) |

I generally am favorable for a RIO/Avant split, but that would be alot of work. Would you split the team up too?

No, I think not. It would be similar to the folks on the PMT being responsible for three subs. |

Eh, first I've heard of this. My thoughts: frankly, RIO/Avant is a pretty small and not exactly wildly well-known category. Just thinking in particular of RIO, is it really worth doing that for so few bands? Do we need another subcategory, just because we can, and even more bickering about which category a borderline band should fall into? Personally, can't actually see the point in it. Would probably be more useful to simply add a 'RIO' thing in all the biographies of RIO artists and not do that for non-RIO artists. |

Oh Rob... your innocence is cute. Prog heads will never stop breaking things down into categories. One day we'll have 50 subs of Art Rock alone

I thought this way initially, but: what is the real argument against another subgenre? |

I'm glad I'm too lazy to do this myself Anyway, I'm sure we'll get at least three Rush-related categories (bands influenced by Led Zeppelin, bands influenced by A Farewell To Kings/Hemispheres and bands influenced by Snakes And Arrows), a category all for Pink Floyd, and last, but not least, a different category for every King Crimson album (except the first two, since they are EXACTLY THE SAME, I mean, The Devil's Triangle sounds exactly like ITCOTCK at 4.35 and 8.37 respectively, and Beat/Discipline/TAPP, because noone likes the 80s). |

Lots of work. Little return. More arguing. Also, tbh, I think RIO/Avant is more eyecatching as a united front than a divided one. I mean, RIO... three letters! I'd just about ignore it if it wasn't followed by a slash. I can appreciate that the people who know it better than I do think a separation might be needed, but in my view that's a bit like dividing eclectic further just to make sure that VDGG/other extreme eclectic bands aren't in the same category as Gentle Giant/other ultra-complex/justplainweird eclectic bands. |
