Tell me what you thought of the 3rd part in particular, it's pure bliss to my ears.

Bone are a hip-hop band as well as a wonderful prog band, so that is also annoying.
By the way, do you have Egg's Metronomical Society?

I'm really contemplating a proposed split of the RIO/Avant sub. Would you be in favor of this in a general sense, James? I'd really like to see the RIO movement highlighted more prominently.

Yes, I'm all for it. It was actually my idea in the first place. You're just a follower of my idea. As long as it's not just the original RIO bands (plus the other two that joined later). I think it should be: RIO-Orientated Avant-prog I was initially thinking of also separating American avant-prog but decided against it because bands such as 5uus are RIO-Orientated and aren't Zappa-Orientated.

I don't. Egg Archive has that as well as the Arzachel album, but the prices are a bit steep. Still, want to get both eventually.

You also need Nicholas Greenwood's album. It's not amazing but it's very good. I like it. I also have Arzachel and well... it's disappointing.

See if there wasn't a split, I'd then want a tagging system in place of it. It would be the same except there wouldn't be a genre split.
But Pat... how do we decide which bands fit where?
I mean... bands like Cartoon are influenced by Henry Cow and other RIO bands but Guapo, who played The RIO Festival in 2006 don't really sound like those classic RIO bands but are influenced by them, as well as Magma.
And well... Magma also played the RIO festival.
We'll need to make it a team effort.

Not emo, Stravinsky being emo. ;-)
I would be OK with RIO-influenced and avant-prog, even though I don't know where that line would break because even though I have been lurking the RIO thread forever, I make far fewer purchases outside of emusic than most of you, and my attentions have been directed elsewhere lately. Not that what I think really matters. ;-)
Speaking of which, was Berlin Djungle awesome, Pat?

It will be a big effort, and it won't be easy. Some people will probably be unhappy with the final placement of some bands. But in the end, I think it's a good idea and will be the best for the site. RIO is as important and influential as Canterbury and Zeuhl, which are represented with their own genres.

I was wondering if you saw that pretty, yes, but I find it boring and generic. Sorry

Pfeh. I figure you're more the Ashes Are Burning type, anyway... I need to write a review... Some Day One Day, eh?

I started reading We by Yevgeny Zamyatin, James (and for whoever else is interested). I'm really enjoying it so far, reading a few "records" each say, taking it in slowly. I'm not sure how I'll rank it between 1984 and Brave New World (of those two, I prefer 1984), but I'm really enjoying the setting, characters, and the "mathematical, bipolar, and romantic" style of prose.

I figure Ashes Are Burning would be more up your avenue. A Turn Of The Cards, probably not so much (I mean, I'm not a huge fan of it. Think it's more an extension of the Scheherazade ideas without the memorability)

I'll check out the sample that's on PA. They're a band that I want to like but... can't... yet... for some reason
Yeah Rob, what the hell? They give you the fourth star and then you don't do anything with it . Actually, I know how you feel - until today I had to force myself to write reviews, but today I got up and felt the need to write two! Yaaaaaaaaaaaay!
|
I know, I'm just have difficulty starting up on them. To be honest, I think most of my recent reviews have been pretty safe/uninteresting ones, and that's not really how I want to do them.
