so, if you were betting shedders, what would you say the chances were of Alistair Darling finally giving into the temptation of actually printing more money and putting it into circulation, in order to boost the economy... 
and furthermore, what would be the chances that I would actually see any of it...  |

We could go the way of Zimbabwe, they've just started printing $100 trillion dollar notes. I think it buys a Mars bar or something.

hmm... I think we're going to need an entire wheelbarrow full of them to buy a Mars Bar, bfore the end of this recession....

That's not a bad idea Rach. We book the place out, make a bit of noise, throw some plate, Jared contacts his bosses and tells them he's just saved his place from being trashed by a bunch of rowdy prog fans - no wait, they'd never believe that, make it Dream Theater fans - and is immediately made a hero. Sorted.

Just because Talking Heads talk doesn't mean they have a clue about what they are talking about. The auto companies' biggest problem is that Bush let the oil companies run rampant under his watch. I agree that we in the US have been luckier than most countries to have had lower gasoline prices, but we are also a major producer of oil. On one hand, the oil companies said that they had to increase their prices to keep up with their increasing expenses, and then lo and behold at the end of the year, each and every oil company set a new record profit. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that if you are recording a record profit then your price increase exceeded your supposed costs that you had to keep up with. And don't let anybody fool you regarding the real reason that the US invaded Iraq. Bush's wacko religious policies was one reason, but the main reason was because his friends in the oil companies wanted control or a larger piece of the oil pie over there. I, for one, fully believe that the citizens of the United States should be allowed to send the war bill over to the oil companies and have them reimburse us for it, since them and only them will ever receive any benefit from it.
Rant aside, I have no idea what is going to happen to the big 3. For all I know, the state of Michigan is looking at a "last one out turn out the lights" scenario.

^^ that's a nice rant Scott...   (possibly the wrong room, but a nice rant all the same... )
the feeling over here for some time is that the big 3 were warned as far back as the early to mid 90's that they needed to invest more in designing smaller, more economical models which could compete with the Pacific Rim, as it would only be a matter of time when the US would no longer be cushioned by low fuel prices, but collectively they failed to do so... I know that sounds quite simplistic, and I'm sure you'll see things differently... notwithstanding, I hope your motor industry can come through this, leaner and stronger, without too much human suffering..
as far as the part about Bush/ Blair is concerned, I don't think you'll find any regular Shed resident who'll disagree with you...  |

The Shed
great big pile. I see there is talk of Sir Fred being stripped of his knighthood. The guy who sits next to me wants to put a contract out on him (payment in RBS shares). It's somewhat ironic that the purchase of ABN Amro that dropped RBS right into the big pile of brown stuff is actually giving everyone in IT sh*t loads of work!
