Ours are split between Lloyds TSB & Abbey, aka Santander (I thought they were a sports channel); just makes you wonder where they'd be safest... not looking for big returns, just relative security.

I am really sorry to hear the news on your job J.
It appears that some companies still haven't learnt from the mistakes of the 90's when "downsizing" was the term of the day.
(apologies to my dear friends in America - no offence  ) You mix business theory with some geek in the US and you just know its going to lead to problems.
...and it looks like some companies/charities/etc still fall for it.
They forget you cannot replace experience and it is your experienced staff that pull you through the good and bad times.
Funnily enough the guy who created the "downsizing" theory later admitted he was wrong!

Hmmm, well I guess as the resident Financial Adviser in the Shed I should contribute.
Security - can mean many things to be honest.
Of capital? restricted in a bank and building society as you know. If you have more than the allowance then you could lose it if the institution fails. It will more than likely produce returns less than inflation. Thus the lack of security becomes the byproduct of the original intention for it.
Of capital and returns? Invest in an insurance provider. No good unless you can leave it for at least 5 years. Via an Investment Bond the first £2000 is 100% protected and 90% of the remaining. The more invested the better off you are compared to banks and Bldg Socs. A diverse portfolio is the key.
Personal opinion? Get in the markets if you any spare cash. You may have to wait a few months but you will be rewarded.
Banks: Not an issue and no concerns short or long term. The only problems will occur if the treasury continue to allow "shorting" especially of the banks shares.
Did you notice that as soon as they were allowed to make their bets again the Banks shares crashed?

Sorry to hear about the news on the jobs-front. 
My brother-in-law who works for RBS says that he feels very unsure about his future at the bank.He has been with them and their subsidiaries since 1978.
A friend of ours has just been made redundant from GSK (Glaxo,
Smith Kline).It also seems that this will have a knock-on effect with regard to their recently purchased property and are having to consider down-sizing (I hate that expression).

Greenford Glaxo SK factory is 1 mile from my house - news came last year they were closing, many staff have been moved to Ware but many have been made redundant. They set up there in the 30's and were known for baby products (any Glaxo Babies in the shed?/). when i was about 6 i would wait outside the gates selling evening newspapers with my brother. wonder who'll buy the land?

Well from what our friend progmetalhead says, and if I remember this correctly, so long as your savings in any one bank don'r exceed £30,000, they should be safe, ie covered by the government even if the bank goes belly up....
...and how many in The Shed have more than that in savings anyway?

I'm up against time right now (having just read the last 3 pages with widen eyes)
Jared mate, thinking of ya, hope things will come good, and the hatchet man dosn't have you in his sights......... can we all help by coming to stay? We can book the place out for a Shed- Event then write letter to the boss to say how great you are?
