Israel was created in 1948.  Not exactly ages.

Modern day Israel, yes.  Israelite kingdoms occupied the region since around 11 BC.  I think that qualifies as ages.  And of course, correct me if I'm wrong, but they took over a lot of the land from the Philistines...

Amongst other tribes or nations, yes.  But it's still completely besides the point.  The present conflict is due to the forced removal or cantonization of people already living in the region beginning with the formation of the modern state of Israel.  It is important to recognize this distinction between political and cultural conflict.  Of course, some do cynically use the latter to spur the former.

Still like many other areas on the planet, people have been fighting over this land for ages.  It didn't all begin in 1948.  I just find it a little short sighted to declare that it all began then.  I have no relatives involved in that conflict so it's easy for me to say they all just have to cut it out and learn to get along.  My country owes it's existence to the accidental and planned eradication of people who had been living here for quite a while.

and with a rather level head

Yes, asserting that posts "need to be hidden" and the thread should be "shut down" are surely indicative of a stoic nonchalance.

if you want to keep discussing Israel/Gaza go ahead but at least stay focussed

Read my posts in this thread, and then reevaluate your suggestion.

If you think that EM's position is indefensible then you can think again and I do not think it reflects well on you that you would hint that hiding posts on a forum equates with the infamous "I was just doing my job" quotes from history.

We have members from all over the globe and every creed, race etc. It is not our intent that they be offended by words written on what is basically a forum dedicated to Prog Rock.

If you seek robust discussion about Politics and World Events I suggest you seek out a forum dedicated to those topics.

The Admin Team has layed out a site policy that you would do well to read, digest and follow. If that is beyond you I suggest you hot foot it out of here.

And by the way, the political discussion thread is getting a bit lonely, probably my fault. Tongue

Not quite persuasive.

...and I do not think it reflects well on you that you would hint that hiding posts on a forum equates with the infamous "I was just doing my job" quotes from history.

Evidently, personal attacks are permissible in certain contexts made by the right people.  There was a number of rather crude remarks and implicit assumptions made about the Palestinians.

In any case, my point, which should be obvious to the meanest intelligence, was that "just doing one's job" is not sufficient justification for much of anything.  And I'm hardly concerned about how such a view reflects on me, especially when the reflecting mirror is cracked and dusty.

Read it before I joined.  And you would do well to note the nature of my posts.  The Admin Team, though, is apparently invulnerable to criticism, and quite self-satisfied in the way they steer their overrated ship.  Do you know what I find offensive?  The sort of contempt for free discourse, reluctance to self-criticism, and overall intellectual cowardice which seems to have free reign amongst self-proclaimed progressive minds.

My interest in this thread, and in this forum, has fully evaporated: for I lack the masochistic desire to correct behavior best suited for the sandbox.

And what an exit it was.  Would be a shame to ruin it with any further posts.

I believe the Archives needs characters like you but without the sneering arrogance that you feel is so necessary.

Intellectual cowardice? This is Progarchives, get over yourself lad.

The point is that forum allows the kind of boisterous, no holds barred political discussion that many here crave. It suits their style but not ProgArchives'. The fact that it is a rush forum is irrelevant. it is the biker bar of Prog forums....Wink
