Hi,

Been playing around and learning a little more about keyboards these days ... 30 years too late, but it's been said that age ... is not a part of music! (I quoted myself here!)

So you get a beginner dufus that can barely pitch his way D ... and he gets a Midi and then ... some software.

I picked up Arturia's Jupiter-8V software.
Have an M-Audio Oxygen 61

I am thinking that I am looking to upgrade since the Midi has some small click sounds if I press 3 keys together on the low end of the scale. At first I thought this might be the software, but the clicking sounds are on the keyboard, and would seem to me that there is something electrically speaking in there that is not having fun.

Since it's a cheapie and the M-Audio folks are not interested in fixing it, let alone replace it ... I'm ready for the next step.

Edirol PCR-800 is what I am looking at ... and yes, it does need to have some knobs and faders for me ... I like to maneuver these all day long and have fun!

After that I was wondering if someone had good suggestions for String/Orchestral packages. Not sure that I am ready to spend 1,000 mules yet, but 100 is certainly plausible.

Will I be taking this to a professional level? I have no idea. Never say never, right?

But I am comfortable enough with my writing ability (500 poems, short stories, 300 art film reviews at IMDB.com and 300 more not uploaded, more writing than toilet paper available all over!) that I am already doing poetry on top of sounds that I can create with the Jupi ... but I miss the teutonic string sound of a Schulze or TDream, or Vangelis ... and would like to play with it more.

Any software suggestions anyone can make?

And thx in advance ...

Here is a free VST mellotron that might interest you. It's not quite up to Native Instruments standards, but it is excellent nonetheless, especially for free.

Your best buy in that price range would definitely be Miroslav Philharmonik Classic Edition:

IK is running a buy one/get one free special now, for any other IK plugin at or below the price of the one you buy, so you couldn't have picked a better time to get it. You could get Sonik Synth for free, which would give you a huge library of sounds of just about every variety. It's like getting a free Roland Fantom or Motif!

The Edirol you mentioned is a great choice for the extra controls. M-Audio controllers are great, but the feel of the keyboard on the Edirol will be better. EMU X-Board has the best feeling keyboard action, but besides the 16 knobs, and pitch/mod wheels, it lacks the pads and sliders you would get on the Edirol and M-Audio. If you can, try to play some in a music store.
