This has become one of my favorite Genesis songs, and I recently read the lyrics, and it is now my favorite. The lyrics are brilliant, one of the most brilliant I have ever read. It could go in a book of great poetry.

Fifty thousand men were sent to do the will of one.
His claim was phrased quite simply, though he never voiced it loud,
I am he, the chosen one.

In his name they could slaughter, for his name they could die.
Though many there were believed in him, still more were sure he lied,
But they'll fight the battle on.

/admin edit: the rest of the lyric can be read here: One For The Vine

Who wrote the lyrics after Gabriel left?

I repeat myself when under stress, I repeat myself when under stress, I repeat myself when under stress, I repeat myself when under stress, I repeat myself when under stress . . .

My guess is that this one is written by Tony Banks. He knows a lot about biblical imagery, though he didn't use it as much as Gabriel.

Yes, it must be Banks who wrote this. Definitely. I can't imagine Rutherford or Hackett write anything like this. Let alone Collins.

Let's not forget that there are rights surrounding lyrics and they can't be reprinted without proper permission...

This is true.

Apologies to Rael, but I've had to remove the bulk of the lyric from the opening post, it can be read in full on the linked page
What?

Sorry. Didn't realize. I don't think it would have mattered much, since I am not claiming the wokr as my own or profiting off of it, but I understand.

I just love the lyrics though.

Yes, but some artists have been touchy on the subject. Sites who exclusively publish lyrics actually do have to pay for the license to use them.

But let's not turn this into a legal discussion! They are great lyrics, through and through Clap

I just love how it is cyclical. It is really a mark of good lyrics when reading them makes you like and appreciate the music even more. Though, it is unfortunate when it goes the other way.

W&W is very much a Banks album.  I believe he at least co-wrote just about everything on it.  I remember reading an interview with Genesis from around that time where each member was aksed to choose their favorite album.  Banks chose W&W and the others all chose Foxtrot.
