My jazz teacher didn't really teach us much. She would just talk about random jazz musicians being "hip, swingin' cats" (yes, she really talked like that) and didn't really give much objective info, just names. Easy A without doing much, I only got a B on the midterm, but she liked my jazz concert review a lot (John Abercrombie came to our school, it was pretty awesome), so I got an A. |
Oh dear. I have visions now of a beatnik girl in a black turtle-neck and a beret.

You wouldn't be far off either, she didn't seem old enough to be from that era, but if she were 5-10 years older than maybe. She was cool though, and I liked her, just I could learn more about jazz from one day of moderate research online, vs. a whole semester's worth of going there and watch her praise Thelonious Monk over and over.

Yeah, that's understandable.
My Business Law teacher I have seems knowledgeable, she's just a horrible teacher.
|
The worst is getting a horrid teacher who is also a difficult or unfair grader. The ideal teacher is both informative and interesting (can make it fun sometimes even - but too much fun can make people miss the point), and slightly difficult so one must work to achieve a good grade. School is almost too easy unless one is in all advanced classes, which I never bothered to do.
|
I agree with that entirely.
Fortunately, I haven't run into any really awful teachers who were simultaneously unfair graders.
|
My politics teacher last semester was probably the most difficult teacher I have - he's notorious for it. He also knows more than anybody I've met about politics, so I learned a bunch in that class. I was worried I would end up with a C, since it's very easy to bomb his tests, but I must have aced the final because I ended up with a B. That was probably the only time I ever felt really content with a grade in my life - most people in that class got D's, F's, or dropped out.
|
I know what you mean. So far in college I haven't had any extremely difficult teachers, but then again... that's in comparison to my accelerated high school where several of my teachers were very difficult.

That's neat. I've been busier myself, but not incredibly so and not quite in that regard, haha. I bet some of that can be tedious, but the whole situation must be exhilarating.
Zeuhl karaoke?
Awesome. |
Ah, well, it's going to be fun arranging it all once the big things are sorted (date, venue, etc.). I'm glad to say it's going to be pretty simple - c. 50 guests in total probably! Happily, my fiancé is not the kind of person who gets easily stressed or obsessed with minutiae, which is a huge relief. (The guy I was with before him was a dreadful nitpicker, which made life rather difficult at times!!) Oh yes, the stuff I ordered from Wayside just shipped too! So I have a package to look forward to, yay. (Zeuhl karaoke should occur in bars. )

That's great. When/if I ever get married, I hope it's really simple and small as well; I'm not one for unnecessary extravagance.
I'm glad for you though and wish you luck with your endeavours.

That's cool. I am always extremely excited when I get something in the mail because it doesn't happen very often, and when it does it's nearly always because I ordered it. Musical items are the best.

It should. I'm not sure if that would make me more apt to go or not though.

Thanks Alex! Yes, having seen what some people do for weddings (...do people really go so far as to buy 'stand in rings' for the rehearsal? ), I think finding a nice hotel in the country and only inviting people who actually care is the way to go.

...he says, paraphrasing Zappa. Mail is fun, when it's not a credit card bill! I have a few penpals I write with, so I do get interesting letters from time to time. ...but yes, musical items are the best!

I read somewhere that Vander's favourite drink was apple juice and Klaus preferred mineral water. You're in good company!

Haha, yes, there are a lot of teachers like that out there - nice, interesting people, but more likely to talk about something irrelevant (or repeat themselves a whole lot) than actually... teach you anything.
I had a German teacher at school who once spent an entire double lesson rambling on about Helmut Kohl and how his surname means 'cabbage'. Another time she claimed to be a Polish countess.
|
That's funny.
|
What made it more ridiculous was that she was saying something along the lines of, "I shouldn't be allowed to vote in British elections: number one, I'm foreign (Polish), number two, I'm of royal blood (Countess!), and number three, I'm mad." I sat there wondering how on earth she'd got hired.

That sounds great to me. Haha, "stand in rings", gotta love stuff like that. It's so unnecessary.

Haha, I didn't even realize I paraphrased that there... that's my 2nd favorite Zappa album.
Yeah, fortunately I don't really get any bills yet because I'm a minor still living with my parents. Maybe it's good I don't get much mail then.

That's even better.
Maybe tons of water = extraordinary drumming abilities?

Well, it takes a lot of energy, drumming at length! Perspiration occurs!
You're telling me. I sweat easily too.
I guess you'd need to make sure you didn't get dehydrated during that 30-minute extended rehash of De Futura.
Haha, yeah.
ENGAGE WATER BOTTLE!
Wow, that gives me a great idea for a motivational poster.

Hey, Linus. I would talk, but I actually have to go eat before elimination game, so I'll be back. If you're interested, it'll be different from the original version and tons of fun! All you need is an AIM screenname and then you have to tell me what it is. If you don't even have one, signing up takes like 2 seconds and it's free and easy to use.
