I don't think it would be a good move. Like I said, he's one of the founders of the genre, why move him?
I thought it might be that one but I don't see how it has anything to do with FZ.

Because he encompasses much more than that genre and his other albums mislead people into thinking the genre is something it's not.

I'd think of him more as "proto-RIO"...a huge influence on the founders of the genre, the original RIO bands.

In which case he should stay where he is.
Is proto-prog prog? Is King Crimson in Symphonic?

I finally ordered Sleeping in Traffic Part 2, which I am now eagerly awaiting.

Are any of you Shredder guys fans of post-rock?  I came across this band called Waddle, and I am kind of enjoying them.  I'm not sure if they are post-rock or not, but some of their influences are so I think that they might be.  If you're interested check out the thread I created in suggest new bands.  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=54759

Thanks.

^^^You just continued to prove my point. Now not even Frank Zappa is avant enough to stay in the sub.

No, but did Krimso start Symphonic? Hell no. Is "Court Of The Crimson King" symphonic? No. Did we move Genesis to Neo or Xover because of ...Then There Were Three... or Abacab? No.

Edit - why did this post fail so hard? LOL

C'mon, we all know that secretly you are Kayo Dot's biggest fan here on PA.  I tried GY!BE and EiTS and didn't really care for either of them.  This Waddle album is pretty good though, which makes me think that maybe it isn't Post Rock; but since their major influences seem to be post rock bands...  Anyhow, I should just plead ignorant.

Some post metal is amazing, some of it is the best stuff I've ever heard - then there's Kayo Dot.

I have a few albums by GY!BE (they're a local band where I'm from, so I thought I'd support the local indie scene ) and Sigur Ros but I think the last time I played them was...

...

...

a long time ago. Don't much miss 'em either.

I've only heard Dowsing Anemone from Kayo Dot, and I didn't really care for it.  It was pretty boring if I remember correctly.

Holy sh*t KBT, how did you do that!?

I was always told that ITCOTCK started symph even though only 2 of the songs are really symph. It's not something I really care about so I don't know.

The point is that sum of his work is not avant-garde enough. You're making it sound like there's a massive purification effort, but I have no idea why you would think that. It's you guys who won't give up Taal. :P Or what that has to do with laplace but I haven't read that thread in a long time.

Okay folks, in celebration of finishing my very boring cafe video (which actually wasn't so bad in the end) I'm *gasp! * going outside for a while. See ya!

Personally I liked the idea of keeping the Mothers albums in avant (obviously making a separate "artist"), and moving the rest of FZ to eclectic, but I think that idea is DOA.

Later Mike.

Taal? Am I supposed to be doing/voting on something that I don't know about? Embarrassed - Yeah, I never actually read that Raprace thread, but it came to mind when I saw your poll.

Here's the thing. I'm no Zappa expert, but when I think avant I think Zappa and vice-versa. Pat said that it may gave a bad impression for those looking to start, but I think those who are going to get into avant are going to do it anyways. It's not an entry-point type subgenre like Jazz or HP, either you're into it or you're not. I think that if the majority of visitors saw Zappa in Eclec we'd have more complaints about it than "true Zappa experts" giving us kudos for acknologing his many faces. Even if someone use Zappa as a jumping point to the sub his music is easily more accessible and if someone gets into the 'weirder' stuff of his then they'll decide to reach deeper into the sub.

Plus there's this - he doesn't really fit into Eclectic. He could/would fit if we stuffed him in, but that's like someone trying to get into clothes that are 2 sized too small - it would be painfully noticable and rather ugly. Eclectic does have it's own personality and sound, it's not just a miscellaneos dumping ground for bands who have a lot of styles or who are 'not avant enough to be avant"

PS- I have no idea how I did that with my last post LOL

HP, bottom line is I wouldn't get my hopes up too much because this very issue was raised over in late 2007 (a thread in the CZ I read today), and the idea went nowhere.  I doubt there will be any more traction for it this time around.

My problem (in that it, at the least, bugs me) is that I think there are important, fundamental RIO/Avant albums that may be "shut out" because Hot Rats or the Grand Wazoo are on that page.  This is not so much about Zappa, but really related to a bigger can of worms - tagging and characterization of albums instead of artists.
