My great discovery this year is a record shop in New York called Downtown Music Gallery. Fortunately for me, I don´t live in NY, otherwise I´d spend too much money there!
Bands and artists (including live shows):
Godspeed you Black Emperor!
Steve Reich
Igor Stravinsky
Gentle Giant
Rush
Return to Forever
McCoy Tyner
Picchio dal Pozzo

Besides the fact that I was better of as an independent consultant rather than being on someone else's payroll, my biggest discovery of 2008 was by all means
Pennelli di Vermeer |

ISKC Rock Radio
I stopped blogging and reviewing - so won't be handling requests. Promo's for ariplay can be sent to [email protected] |

If i thought on every single band i discovered i would not finish, now i have a couple that really impressed me, one is an old Portuguese band called Quarteto 1111 whose music is incredible, symphonic sound at it's best with emotional vocals by Joce Cid.
And the second one has to be Willowglass, the album Book of Hours which i voted as the best 2008 album, mellotron heaven, great music!!

Well it's 2009 now, and the only new album that I have discovered is Nemo -- Barbares, but it's a good one.

My biggest find of the year is Eternal Now.
It is a symphonic progressive metal band here in the Philippines. They are not yet that great and well-known but I'm just happy because at last, progressive rock is slowly blooming here in our country. Aside from them, there also is Fuseboxx which is also a progressive rock band. Bravo! ![]() ![]() |

I'm thinking Karmakanic would be up there, plus Lazily Spun and Crime In Choir

My discovery this year was quality prog-metal: it started in late 2007 and continued in 2008. Opeth, Parallaxe, Blotted Science, Subterranean Masquerade, Negura Bunget, Cynic are the stand-outs.

...and I found a lot of old stuff such as SBB, Solaris and Indexi, as well as getting hold of a pile more Zappa material

About 8 or 9 years ago me and a buddy made our annual trip to the Kansas City Blues & Jazz Festival. The Friday night headliner was the Pat Metheny Group and I was so stoked. Metheny's always been a favorite of mine and I had seen him once before. A Metheny show is really quite the experience. Saturday night's headliner was a guy named McCoy Tyner. I knew nothing about him, but was there to hear some good jazz. 9:00 rolls around and three men come on the stage: a drummer, upright acoustic bass player and Tyner on piano. To be honest, I didn't quite know what to expect; however, the sound that these three men created was mind blowing. I had seen a 7 piece in Metheny's band the previous night, but swear that the McCoy Tyner Trio produced just as much sound. It could be the single most overwhelming live music experience that I had ever had. This same buddy and I saw him a few years later down at the Gem Theater in KC and he didn't disappoint. My buddy has since passed away, but Tyner really changed us that hot summer evening in Kansas City. A true American treasure. E |

This will be "this year" as in past year, not the last 21 days.. Caravan.
I've discovered tons of bands this year, but Caravan was the most important by far. It's been a very long time since I've gone through a day without hearing Caravan.

So far of 2009, Velislav Ivanov is the best of the 3 new ones.
