I don't think he's racist - I think it's pure coincidence that this incident happened over three years ago... round about the time he decided it would be a good idea to attend a fancy dress party in Nazi uniform.

They are like the generation of people who used to say things like "I'm really not racist, but you dont want blacks moving into the street. The house prices will tumble"

I dont think there is any actual malice in their ignorance, they are just of a different world and a different age.

Everybody has nicknames in the army, but they're all comrades, brothers in arms and equals in uniform. The fact that the derogotary remarks were made by an officer who is also 3rd in line to the throne about a member of his platoon who was alseep at the time has nothing to do with it; there's a lot of friendly banter in the army, and I'm sure the young private in question was equally forthright about Prince William, who doubtless had a good laugh about it with his minders.

Similarly, the furore the BBC tried to stoke yesterday with the revelation the Prince Of Wales refers to (and has always referred to) a long standing Asian friend as "S**ty" - which the man himself completely defused by defending Charles to the hilt & saying he quite likes the nickname.

It's the whole point of the Ranting Room, Rob - you don't have to be gramatically correct in here - ranting can be just that, a stream of conciousness or indeed gibberish, just to get your point across, no matter how incorrect, inane or asinine (which is probably why it was me who started it )

Very true, Chris. That accounts for Harry's faux pas, I guess. The rest of them are just....

Some people (the press) just jump to conclusions. Perhaps the nickname came about due to a relationship with a Sue. LOL

Things that piss me off:
People that can't tell the difference between a "P" and an "R."Wink

But seriously, I know it's cliche but I can't stand anything on E!, MTV, or VH1, or any reality show. People just think they should act like completely spoiled brats with no idea that their actions actually affect other people. Absolute garbage. I've long since been convinced that the soul/mind of an old man took over my body in my early teens. Not really a rant but whatever.

HEATHROW EXPANSION PLANS
Government approves 3rd runway  Ouch

"Get 'em out by Friday!
You don't get paid till the last one's well on his way.
Get 'em out by Friday!
It's important that we keep to schedule, there must be no delay."

"I represent a firm of gentlemen who recently purchased this
house and all the others in the road,
In the interest of humanity we've found a better place for you
to go, go-woh, go-woh"

[Mrs. Barrow (a tenant)]

"Oh no, this I can't believe,
Oh Mary, they're asking us to leave."

[Mr. Pebble]

"Get 'em out by Friday!
I've told you before, 's good many gone if we let them stay.
And if it isn't easy,
You can squeeze a little grease and our troubles will soon run away."

[Mrs. Barrow]

"After all this time, they ask us to leave,
And I told them we could pay double the rent.
I don't know why it seemed so funny,
Seeing as how they'd take more money.
The winkler called again, he came here this morning,
With four hundred pounds and a photograph of the place he has found.
A block of flats with central heating.
I think we're going to find it hard."

[Mr. Pebble]

"Now we've got them!
I've always said that cash cash cash can do anything well.
Work can be rewarding
When a flash of intuition is a gift that helps you
excel-sell-sell-sell."

Disapprove

To not have a state of the art airport designed for the 21st century puts us back into the Stone Age.
Peter Marton, Middlesbrough

- currently one of the leading comments on the BBC's Have Your Say section, believe it or not Confused.

So there you have it - either we have yet another massively unpopular expansion which is probably unnecessary and arguably destructive, or we revert to being an island populated by a few thousand neolithic-hunter gatherers with no written language. It's good to have a sense of perspective about these things.

It always amuses me that the the people with the most extreme views are proportionally further from the epicentre than the moderates, both in their opinion and their geographical location - A third runway isn't going to affect someone living 250 miles away in Middlesbrough - stick it in his backyard and see what Mr Marton has to say then.

Any more air traffic and we'll be living in a Stone Age sooner than we think.
What?

Yes, but with fewer spelling mistakes in the graffitti.

I've always wondered that because Paki is just the diminuitive of Pakistani in the same way that Brit is the diminuitive of Briton, Scot is the diminuitive of Scotsman and Aussie the diminuitive of Australian.

I think that it's a product of history and the way that the word was used in the 1970s and 1980s.  i.e. always as part of an insult.

However you are correct; simply referring to someone as a Paki is no more insulting that referring to them as an Aussie (ah, may have found the problemWink).

Because it has been used as a racial slur for so long it has no other meaning. Just because the word itself is "innocent" does not make use of the word innocent..

What?
