Sounds like it should be an oxymoron, but it isn't.

After a few listens of that song I was hooked and then listened to it everyday for about 2 months straight.

No, I was just wondering if there were any plans to move Zappa, since I've seen several people talk about it. Then NS told me there isn't because only several people have talked about it. |
Well when the ZART discussed it a while back, most of us agreed he'd be better in Eclectic. So I'm not exactly sure why he's still in RIO/Avant-prog... oh well. Not only was it because only a handful of his albums are avant-prog but also because all his albums hog the top spot when it comes to ratings and well, that's not very representative of the genre. I don't know much Zappa but I do know all his albums are varied and his career didn't centre on any particular one. Therefore, in my mind, Eclectic fits him like a glove. He isn't an avant-prog artist. Yes he made some avant albums but it's not the sum of his career. He changed ideas when the wind blew.

Zappa might fit into the eclectic genre better, but I think his music is more characterized by avant-garde humor than anything else. So it could go either way. I don't really like the new ProgArchives taxonomy, I preferred the simpler days when, if in doubt, you'd just put it in "Art Rock." :P

No one really has explained what makes him eclectic, just that he's "not avant enough" which brings up that whole Laplace thread again...
If I think avant, what's the first artist that I think of? Zappa. Moving him would be like putting Rush in Prog Related because of their 90s albums.

I don't own a single Zappa album. Therefore I'm comfortably silent in this discussion.

| Not just that, he also fuses a lot more styles than avant rock. I don't know what thread you're talking about.
No, it's not, because the most famous Rush albums are prog. FZ is more well known for Hot Rats, Overnight Sensation, One Size Fits All, etc. than Weasels Ripped My Flesh and Freak Out. And IMO Freak Out shouldn't even count because Monster Magnet and the humor are the only really avant-garde things on there.

"Elitest Avant Proggers"
I don't think it would be a good move. Like I said, he's one of the founders of the genre, why move him?

I'd think of him more as "proto-RIO"...a huge influence on the founders of the genre, the original RIO bands.

In which case he should stay where he is.
