Thanks guys! We're mostly good. Me and the wife are thinking of moving to a bigger place, now that we have Simon. It's getting pretty cramped up where we stay right now. |

We hope so. Hopefully by next year, the wife can secure a housing loan. We're currently renting.

Ohh okay.
My parents bought this house we currently live in, we rented for about, 10-11 months or so while it was being built. I guess it must be a good feeling owning a house. Good luck on the venture:) |

Harry, other SR isn't listening to me!
Can you show me a clear example of drum clipping with the digital compression blah blah blah because I'm not sure if I understand it? But if I do, it was that that was driving me crazy on the radio.
Can the quality of the CD player make a big difference? I understand that being the case with vinyl, but I'm not sure about CDs.

To determine if someone is clipping, the best way is to actually do an analysis of the wave form of the sound file.
You can tell how compressed something is by the variation or lack thereof in the size of the wave form as the track progresses. |

Also clipping will lead to harmonic distortion. |

Death Magnetic by Metallica is one of the prime examples of clipping of albums released in the 21st century.
The music is bad enough, but the production makes it literally unlistenable for me. |

Ohh, yeah, I do about 5 things at once.
I give the illusion I'm constantly on PA, but I'm actually usually playing computer games in the background, reading other forums and pacing around the house every few minutes. |

So the sharp drums here, are they annoying me because they're clipping, or is it just a personal problem? Because like listening to Death Magnetic on Youtube, I can hear the compression, but I'm not sure I can hear the drum clipping.

I think it's just annoying you because of the particular band:P
Seriously though, youtube takes the dynamics out of sh*t and adds it's own compression when it gets converted to it's file format, so it's not a good judge really, didn't sound clipped to me really. I don't think the drums necessarily clipped on Death Magnetic (well I don't own the album, haven't heard it in a while), but when you start turning it up, your speakers begin to get crappy sounding much much earlier than a relatively non compressed release does. If you out a file into a wave file type program, and the wave form is pretty much a solid bar, then you can be pretty sure it clips. The Death Magnetic wave form is basically just a solid bar, urghh. |

Oh, then maybe I don't even have the ability to hear the clipping because of my tinnitus. The same drum sound is in Shiny Happy People and a bunch of other terrible music, so unless XM is doing something dreadful to the sound files, I guess that's just the modern drum sound? It makes me so angry because it's always used in that CLUNK! CLUNK! way that's actually kind of masked in that particular song.

I don't think tinnitus stops you from hearing clipping.
Clipping is just distortion of the signal just as increasing the gain on a guitar amp causes an electric guitar sound to distort. Trust me, you put on an extremely compressed bit of audio, increase the volume to a relatively loud level (not even enough to cause hearing damage, just enough so that's not exactly quiet) and can you hear clipping. Even if you had high frequency hearing loss, you can still hear clipping, because clipping occurs across many frequency points. Edited by HughesJB4 - January 11 2009 at 23:31 |

Oh, ok. Well I'm going to revisit this later because I AM GOING TO DO THIS WORK NOW!
Also, Harry, why does all post-hardcore sound the same to me? I can barely even tell the difference between the songs on Relationship of Command, but I liked them, so it was ok. But then the other albums sounded the same too...And now I'm listening to Drive Like Jehu, and it also sounds the same... :/ Edited by Henry Plainview - January 12 2009 at 00:48 |
