Must have been very interesting. There is a Roman fort just down the road from me alongside the River Yare.

I'm taking my littl'un to Grimes Graves next month. She loves history like me! Big smile

I notice from the map up on my study wall (Embarrassed) that you have quite a few English Heritage sites near you.. maybe you could consider getting yourself an your daughter a Season pass, then you can get around them all, on various days out during the summer...Smile

Thanks Rob... I'll leave the bulk of your comments for them that know more about veg, eg Lee & Jim...although I didn't realise Yorkshire gardens had a 'south-facing' side..LOLWink

the principal reason for my wild flower garden IS actually to attract bees, butterflies and other insects, for which I have recently installed boxes on posts, but it appears to be the lavendar which gets most insect attention...Approve which is nice, because the customers can at least see this... the wildflowers will be in their 2nd year, and as I wish to give them a boost, I will bear your recommendation in mind when I head off to Lyonshall garden centre in a couple of months time...Wink

I'm not much of a gardener - not having a garden may have something to do with it - but since getting a digital camera I've been into taking super macro photos of insects, plant life and suchlike - I've stuck some of the less half arsed efforts on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9823302@N02/

I like the sound of your wildflower garden - any pictures?

LOL, yeah we have been to a few already. The Tut exhibition last year at the O2 was her favourite by far though. Amazing stuff.

sorry Chris, I haven't at present...not owning either a mobile phone or digital camera..Embarrassed but I have a lady who does a couple of hours each Monday afternoon on a voluntary basis, who has one, so I'll get her to take some in the spring, and I'll upload them..

as I think you are probably aware, I manage a Youth Hostel, and we have been making an environmental space for the customers over the past couple of years, with native plants, trellising, a pergola and bird feeding station, besides the wild flower garden... (as with most charites) funds are limited, but its coming along...Smile

I can imagine that was pretty fantastic... I can remember being taken to the British Museum several times as a youngster, myself..Thumbs Up

although I think the history on your own doorstep can be just as fascinating... you just have to dig a bit deeper..Wink

Very nice photos. It's making me pine for the days when I had a good macro camera. Trouble was that it was a film camera and I replaced it with a point and shoot digital compact which isn't very good on close ups. I am looking at getting a digital slide scanner and searching the internet for a moderately priced one. Then I'll be able to download some of my old slides. For some unknown reason I used to like taking pictures of fungi as well as insect life. The Forset of Dean and the Wye Valley being a very good area source of subject material. Ahhh, those were the days. Might have to re-kindle the old flame and get a modern DSLR. Too many buttons and features though which get me all Confused.

Hmmm - reading the last couple of pages, I realise I may have inadvertently offended a forum member.

The comment, made purely as a reference to the former youngest patron of the Shed noticing an even younger member, who coincidentally happens to be female was meant in a light hearted whimsical way & in no way to cause offence.

If such was taken, my apologies.

+++

Now - back to Shed matters - ie, gardening, or the absolute impossibility of such in the current Hertfordshire permafrost & the failure of a Herefordshire man to make himself known when a mere 8 miles from my domicile.

Discuss.

I'm back, I'm a bit jet lagged, I am lovely and brown, and I am freezing cold! Tea is a poor replacement for Pina Colada, I hope you've kept this place tidy, happy new year to you all!
