I only just saw the Collabs top albums of 2008 thread, interesting stuff.

It is interesting. I was a bit surpised, to be honest.
|
What bits surprised you?
|
Watershed seemed a bit of a controversial album, but that's not too surprising, only a little.
The 2nd place album for sure. I hardly even saw it discussed at ALL this year.
I thought Cynic and Ayreon would be higher.
|
I have no idea what the 2nd place album even is really Cynic didn't get higher purely because it's not quite as well known here as they are at say, a metal site, and well, Ayreon got very mixed reviews. Personally, I don't like Ayreon's album at all really.
|
I've heard Cynic twice now (as of today), and it is pretty good. It should be more well-known. Ayreon's I need to hear more... I usually have to be in a certain mod for them. If I am in the right mood though, it can be enjoyable.

Cynic was just too good really. I go through phases of listening to it several times a day. Ayreon's 10100101011010010000000000000000000001111111111111111111111111111111000000000000111111111111111111111111111111000000001111 on the other hand, I can do without.

From your perspective, understandable. You stretched the screen. Barely, but still.

Afenginn would have been in my top #5, but I only heard it today after voting had closed.

Ayreon's new one was in my original top 5, but I decided to replace it with The Fruit Fallen from EdenSong since I have really been enjoying that album. I like the new Ayreon album but not nearly as much as I love The Human Equation.

The Nearfest 2009 lineup is looking pretty sweet.
PFM (Italy) Supersister (Netherlands) D.F.A. (Italy) Oblivion Sun (United States) Beardfish (Sweden) Quantum Fantasy (Belgium) Cabezas de Cera (Mexico)

I commented on that thread today finally. DT threads get ridiculous on this site.

The Human Equation is easily their best album and a huge pinnacle in progressive metal.

Oh hell yes.
|
Awesome. *adds it to list* Remind me about it in a week or two, just in case. It's not like my memory's bad; I just have way too much stuff on that list at the moment. I did get Cynic off of it today. I need to listen to their first album here soon...

For RIO/Avant stuff, visit the thread, see the recommendations and try to check out samples, and then just try and keep a running tally of stuff you need to get (probably almost all from Wayside), and when you scrape a bit of money together order some things. Also, you really need to be on emusic. Scott'll vouch for this.

That seems intriguing. No way I can go this year though, unfortunately. Someday...

You really can't beat eMusic. Something like 40 cents per download instead of 99 cents per download.

Plus they have tons of great prog, as well as great classical and jazz selections.
